55 feet (x2) of laminate is a hell of a lot of weight too. These things do seem float, but not by much. The field laminate will weigh something like 2 lbs/sq ft in a boat like that, vs. water at about 5. But the laminate is probably less than half the weight so maybe it floats 4/5 submerged...
Wondered about that - is there any way to see the course on the Heineken site? They used to have more bells and whistles there including as I recall tracking.
Did the Gunboats sail a longer course than the charter cats? That had been normal in the past.
Looking at the elapsed time results, they are fast - but not disruptively so. We must consider that Tocatta was likely very conservatively sailed with new owners and a new boat.
Gunboat 55 Tocatta, ET: 4:07.53
Catana 65 Selika, ET: 4:07:55
Lagoon 440 Eyowyn, ET: 4:17:43
Etc.

Actually that video makes it look very easy to transfer from the RIB to the ship. The main and only problems they had were launching the life boat in the first place, and then hooking up to retrieve it. You aren't going to retrieve the RIB. Launching the RIB from RM would have been the hardest...
This keeps coming up again and again. The decision to abandon had been made before the ship was on the horizon. The ship could have run over the top of RM smashing her to bits, and would still not be responsible for its abandonment. It was already a done deal.
Reading the three parts, it...
I'm not sure polycarbonate is the answer for windows that big. It does not break easily, but it is quite flexible, and can be forced out of the frame fairly easily. You might not have broken glass on the deck, but you would still have an open window frame, and a big, heavy piece of plastic...
More like 8-9 knot boat if you do the math. Actually something that can average 200 miles a day is pretty fast. Just not as fast as the occasional burst to 18 would lead you to believe. But 200 miles a day isn't going to outrun a front more effectively than 150 miles a day.
Here are a couple of satellite tracked passages:
Gunboat 66 Phaedo, 2011 ARC, 2680 miles in 12 days, 223 miles/day
Gunboat 62 Zenyatta, 2013 ARC, 2680 miles in 14 days, 191 miles/day
In 28 hours RM did about 200 miles which is about average.
What you are suggesting is that they were unlucky with the weather. I have noticed that very often, luck strongly favors the well prepared and the conservative. It is not clear to me that this was an example of "vast experience, perfect planning, and flawless tactics". Certainly the result was...
That really isn't their job is it? Rescuing rich yachties off their toy (at great risk and cost for which they will not be compensated) isn't why they are there. This has been repeated a couple of times by some posters here - "the ship fucked up and ran into RM" - by people far more forgiving of...
Well I don't think you can hand hold the main sheet on a GB 55. As I understand it, the sheet is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder driving a reverse purchase tackle inside the boom. You could "hand hold" the buttons, but I wonder how fast it actually moves.
In that area I have experienced wind...
You'd be better served by investing in a Delorme inReach or Yellow Brick. They are water proof, battery powered, world wide coverage, and you can control who sees the track. The Delorme will only run about 5 days without external power, but the Yellow Brick will go for some weeks. They have...
What I'm wondering is if this narrative will be wrapped up in chapter 2. It could be like a Dickens serial, didn't he get paid by the word? We were told there would be a 2nd installment, but there could be 10.....
