This is an interesting photo,
2 boats a few metres apart both skippers on the bow setting up a code sail.
They obviously trust the autopilot completely.
If I was doing it I would run it up on deck(or forward no leaks) to a cleat and set it up for roughly 4mm double braid (so it will break) and have a 2 or 4 to one system in there to tension it and also so it is a little bit stretchy to keep tension on the system.
Longbow looks like a very good system to me.
We have used a square post in the past to get better surface area for side loads but essentially the same principal as above.
Agree the project is very interesting.
1400l per side, not much different than 13 fat bastards hiking.......
We will be reducing bulb weight so the boat can do cat 0 easily but righting moment will be from water ballast when required.
All this has to be designed yet though. The project has just started.
To answer a previous question the boat we are modifying is a Ker 40. It will have around 1400 l water ballast and a coach house for weather protection.
Yes two handed is growing quickly in Aus.
There was a new scow class 40 in the Hobart race this year that was going very very well upwind the first day till they broke a backstay and that is not even its preferred angle.
Even I am putting together a 40' 2 hander (and I am very much a fan of...
Great to see this type of thing happening.
Would be interesting to follow somehow?
I hope you have a few good people helping you.....a lot of work there!!!
Thank you for the list,
Very interesting.
My feeling was that Redman sailed a very very clever race with perhaps a deeper running kite that let them sail deeper and better vmg for the second half of the race
I wonder if it would be feasible to get an older class 40 and build a new bow section for it, a lot cheaper than a new boat.
i also wonder if a bigger more protected cockpit would not be better over a longer race.
