RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

So clean, do you think Webb's FP thoughts apply to rainmaker? That was the ethic, and how we all felt, "back in the day" (before sat comms). But since, a 911 ethic has taken over, including among the "pros".

RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

Yes, I agree with everything Soma says here. . . . . however, (1) I still don't think the attitude of the piece is that of a proper honest learning seaman, and (2) I still wonder/would like to understand about why the boat was slow (owner comfort, safety or design? or all three), and (3) I...

So he has done 11 transatlantic equivalents in GBs? And more in other boats. At his age? My post above may be 'unfair'. It was a reaction to the tone of the article. Experienced seamen are the most honest and self critical people around. They have to be because mother nature does not leave...

RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

"I’ve sailed about 30,000 NM on Gunboats in winds up to 65knots" (1) honest/true winds up to 65kts are extremely rare offshore (except in hurricanes). You usually have to have F*&Ked up pretty badly to see that. In our time (rather more than this skipper's), we only saw low 60's twice and...

RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

^^ yea. Obviously the boat was perfect and no-one involved made any mistakes. "RAINMAKER departed the dock around 0130. . . . At 1350, I wake up to a gust hitting the side of the hull" = 36 hours from dock out to first wind gusts, exactly as we determined earlier in the thread. "We expected to...

RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

To change the topic just a little . . . I am curious how thick the glass is on this GB . . . Anyone know? Dashew's structural engineer required 25mm glass for offshore, for windows that look to have a shorter span than the GB's. But that is very heavy, and I suspect the GB had nowhere near...

RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

That data is reliable, but it is not public. It is "inside" data from one of the largest boat insurers. Note: I happen to like multi's. But the facts are what they are, and the owners need to damn well understand what they are getting into.

RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

As a big picture aside . . . . When you look at insurance loss rate data, multi's look really bad. . . . Double the hull/rig damage rate and 60% higher injury rate than monos. Multi's are just generally trickier and require more skill and care and quality control all around - in sailing, design...

RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

^^ as has been pointed out up thread there are three 'issues" 1. The wealthy inexperienced owner (particularly with wife or kid also) aboard. I would think the insurance companies would want to look really closely at whether they want to write those policies, even with a pro skipper, because...

RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

You all will also remember the gb90 that almost did not make it to Bermuda, after it spilled all its hydraulic and engine oil in the bilge. Got to give that crew some credit for making port.

RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

At least one major insurance company is right now considering not quoting/writing gunboats for passage making.
