As has been pointed out numerous times. His sponsors, Emirates, Omega etc weren't going to pony up any more cash for an event in NZ. Since the NZ Govt wasn't interested in sponsorship, he had to go OS.

A large crewed "traditional" yacht wouldn't be much cheaper, if at all. Teams would still be spending 100mill+. As Ainslie said, what failed them last time was their design tools - namely the simulator. New teams have to get up to speed in that area. 

Dalton understands sponsors better than anyone. He has delivered for his main sponsors - the corps that have been loyal to him for many years. It may come as a surprise to some, but NZers, and the NZ Govt are not his main sponsors.
