You can leave the true wind and boat speed out of the equation. It is all about the relative positions of the yachts and the apparent wind speed and direction. The disturbed flow area (wind shadow) for faster yachts is the same as for slower yachts provided they have the same sail configuration...
The problem with yacht design, compared to aircraft design, is that there is not a clear envelope to design to. If you buy an aircraft you will be made aware of your flight envelope: Cross wind range, max +/- G range, the so called "manoeuvring speed" at which you will have to fly when in heavy...
They are certainly doing well, but they are only leading the fleet if you believe the Race Tracker. Groupama is 8" closer to the Western ice gate than Sanya, using the measuring tool in the same tracker. Once again it is a mystery how the leader board calculated.
I am amazed at the strong views expressed here by some. What is the problem with the ice gates? They are just way points. Or way lines in this case, if you will. What's the difference with having to leave Fernando the Noronha to port in leg 1? Everybody has to sail the same course. It is just...
I am talking about the third last gybe they did. It was just too early. They came 0.25 NM short which is why they had to gibe two more times, obviously loosing more than needed.
I have not seen anybody say that. They have a, self admitted, problem with reaching. And seem to have a slight edge upwind. Overall the boat seems competitive, but the crew less so.
And then Sanya: They either improved boat performance or they sailed a magnificent leg, or both!
Glad to see them in at about the same time as the other 4 so they will not have any disadvantage for the preparation of the next leg.
Camper, apart from possibly some lucky local lift, may have quite a different sail inventory and polar then the other 3 boats in front of them which are all JK designs.
The bearing to the finish line is SE. To tack away from the coast they are going NE, virtually not making any DMG. It is better...
Thanks! That, or something close to that, must be happening. Hadn't thought of that myself. It renders the instant speed and heading measurements almost useless, but who cares. The positions and tracks are more interesting to watch.
Anybody noticed this ever returning boat speed of 14.1 knots for Groupama, Puma and Telefonica in the Live tracker? Camper is often at 14.2. I wonder where this speed quantizing effect is coming from.
