I'm actually having a Spirit Yacht built and I was thinking I'd reach out to Sean about his thoughts. Thanks for confirming wood could be a viable material for this. I'll ping Sean.
I'm curious if there have been articles written about or speculation on what the future of boat building will be in a few years, in a few decades. Anything from materials, process, design. It seems the cost to build is continuing to go up with the incentive driving boat builders towards larger...
I don't want to use a t-connector because of the shape.
I have a few wires coming thru-hull to my mast. I've added a few holes to accommodate and I'd like to just splice a single multi-wire data cable and have a single hole rather than three. Yes, I know there will be a wider diameter.
Can a...
@JulianB I've thought about PHS systems. I was considering approaching this from the direction of skipper/boat combo handicaps. Similar to golf. You have to sail a bit to build up a sample size of how you as the skipper manage to perform in a given boat over different wind ranges. The issue here...
@WCB that's what I've come to understand, it's a business and there is profit motive which I think is bad for sailing. There needs to be an open VPP that everyone can scrutinize. The current rating systems will bitch about this leading to people optimizing their boats on the margins but if that...
Let me be a bit more concise, pretty much all existing VPP and yardstick rating system play ratings whack-a-mole. They talk a lot of shit about being scientifically based to sell you on their system but then will quickly get into the game of "let's try this rating, oh that didn't work let's try...
@JulianB I completely agree, our local rating system has completely decimated any enthusiasm or hope that sportboats can be competitive. The group that runs the rating system is opposed to accepting any evidence that their system is flawed. They regularly monitor this board and will jump in and...
@Jethrow that's a good eye, as I understand it the North loft that built the sail used windsurfing batten material. The tensioners are the Rocket 1.0 tensioners and these were phased out for sails a long time ago but are still used for windsurfers. What is really dumb is that the rod batten is...
My main has round carbon fiber battens that were sanded down to fit into a rectangular shaped slot at the luff:
The tapered end compromises the strength of the originally round batten and it causes it to break. Are there rounded versions of this I can purchase?
@hendrixharlow out of curiosity, what on the sail were you looking at to determine the performance of the main downwind or were you purely looking at boat speed or SOG?
Is there a general rule like: "If you are sailing downwind and the AWA is X then your boom angle should be Y" ?
My boat is an asym so sailing off the wind is what I need to do. I usually just let the boom go until it seems OK but I figure if I have an AWA value then it would stand the reason...
Seascape 24. I would think that the boat being on a heel does actually pull the leach away from the actual TWA but it may not be enough that it is effecting anything. For the jib leach the only other control I can think of that would change this is if the tension on the leach is flatteing the...
I have a sister boat in my fleet and we sailed horribly. Bad start didn't help but I was certainly sailing lower than they were. The only real difference I made this week was sailing more flat.
I've been focusing on trying to optimize boat heel while racing and recently have found some success sailing flatter than with heel. However, last night I probably over did it and sailed very flat in a moderate breeze and I was noticing that my telltales were breaking at TWA that were about 5 -...
I want to compare various rating systems in use, specifically when it comes to sportboats in the mix. Does anyone have recommendations on ratings that they've felt have been fair across various wind ranges between lighter displacement and heavier displacement boats?
I need to have my 1ton sailboat (already packed, secured, and on a trailer) shipping 400 miles for Annapolis in May. I'm getting quotes of $1.78/mile - $2.25/mile. I've never hired someone to haul for that distance so I am uncertain what competitive rates would be and if I should wait out gas...
@Wavedancer II I took a look at Sandy Point, it may be what we use but it appears to be about 6 miles to AYC. We've got to pull the boat, de-rig, and pack it up so I can drive back to Boston that evening. It's about 2 hours to de-rig. I have to assume a bunch of boats will be trying to get out...
