The answer is and always will be - sail what everyone else sails at your local club. Nothing worse than yet another unnecessary class in a local area that already has good solid fleets of another class.
Its a sweet boat as it is. If you even began the process of increasing performance, there would be no point stopping until it effectively became a 16' skiff which is double the price to build new.
Good question. No idea, it isn't in the measurement rules (only max girths etc). The Sharpie Mainsail Luff is about a foot longer than a 505. I'd guess 20m2 upwind and 46m2 downwind. The boat would struggle with more sail area. We are full hiking at 12 knots.
Well, about the only good thing I can see about the revised AC48 rule is that Team Australia is back which is really what our country needs. Go Aussies.
