Atlantic's on the final stretch; coats of varnish, final paint in the cockpit, and new bottom paint during the next few weeks. Then it's off to the races.
Cheese-grater non-skid came off with the rest of the the cockpit paint, and will be replaced with 2.5mm EVA decking from my friends at Raptor Deck.
Small amount of micro-balloon filler applied to the topsides to provide a smooth surface for the EVA decking, and coats of Awlgrip primer...
And while the 20 waited, the Atlantic got some attention . . .
Last November we looked over Transit and discussed preparing for the 2023 sailing season; it was obvious it needed some TLC.
Toe rails and coamings were “tired”, so they were removed for refinishing. Coamings were repaired, holes...
Had a few stellar days here; been sunny and in the 80s in mid April?
Shifted some boats around and the 20 is back in the BIG shed and up on the high cradle.
Final fit for keel fin and rudder on the short list (finally!).
the 20 has been locked in a garage most of the winter waiting for shed space.
In the meantime I've been getting the Atlantic cleaned up for racing this year; 50 years of paint flaking off every surface in the cockpit, new toe-rails, fresh varnish, etc. (I'll post some photos later).
Also...
Had a rudder I built literally fall off the transom of my friends boat the first 5 minutes of use.
REALLY embarrassing. The gudgeons glued onto the transom let loose; suspect an old tube of glue was the culprit. Bolts were the solution to that problem.
If your laminate's any good, you...
We had two days in a row of 50ish weather which has brought on the second season in Vermont; "Mud". Careful route planning is required to avoid loosing a shoe in the muck.
No worries, the thermometer is headed south and we'll wake up to freezing rain and then a hard freeze (12 F) Saturday...
Cut the laminate in half, sanded a few millimeters shy of final and checked the fit.
There's a single pin that fits through the boat and rudder that I'll use to align these fittings on the rudder. Under the laminate is a G10 tube with a plain bronze bushing. And, "Yes", that's probably twice...
Any suggestions re: what color to paint the bulb?
I've got a bunch of Stars and Stripes blue left in the can . . .
Thinking I may go for this cool copper colored VC17; we rolled a coat on the T 10 and it went on on so slick we didn't bother to sand it; sanding would just rough up the surface...
Keel fin to bulb connection is 98% done; added a fillet to the fin where it plugs into the bulb.
It'll be be super easy to fair this perfectly to the bulb after final attachment.
Just a couple spots in the primer that need a tiny amount of filler; will take care of that when I fill the bolt...
Super Bowl Sunday and out in the shed putting the final layers of carbon on the rudder "pintles"? Not sure exactly what to call these; they are the things on the rudder that attach it to the transom with the rudder pin.
Remember a conversation with Paul Bieker about building these things. His...
Remedy is in very good hands; that's a boat designed and built for a very good friend and really happy it's found it's way back to someone who's taking care of her. Looking forward to spending some time back aboard.
Got a photo yesterday of my 2001 MORC 27 footer “Remedy” with a new coat of paint.
Doesn’t anyone have a different color can of paint?

What's to miss?
72 to 88 degree temps year round, beautiful beaches, great sailing conditions and good friends?
Give me sub zero temps any day; went x-country skiing today and the feeling has just returned to my fingertips.
Aloha
Priming the bulb bottom in these temps is a 3 step process:
1) heat bulb for 90 minutes - this gets the bulb up to about 65 degrees
2) paint bulb - using Awlgrip 545 primer with about 10% reducer which flashes off pretty quick on the warm bulb; I can roll about three smooth coats in 30 minutes...
