Every time I check on Biotherm, they're going even slower... I realize they have a shroud problem and need to preserve the mast, but I hope they can find enough speed to get to the finish before they starve and/or miss the in-port...
A couple random thoughts...
-They've only suspended racing. Might as well finish under jury rig, if they can, if they don't expect to be able to get a mast for the next leg anyway... Get a couple points, get the sponsor some exposure with images of the arrival under jury rig, etc...
-If they...
It comes down to... Do you care if you finish 900th versus 3,000th? If you do, then you probably need to follow the router and take your medicine. If you don't, then stick to your plan and hope the forecast comes back.
Personally, I don't care about results outside the top 100 or so, so in...
Mom doesn't have a plan at the moment. Just playing out the current route to see where it goes. Won't be doing anything exotic unless the current route gets hopeless.
FWIW, I usually sleep 6-8 hours, and rarely wake up for the 4:30 AM wind update. Usually just in volatile conditions or tricky coastal stuff. Staying awake all night is like buying expensive sails for your real boat, or buying expensive golf balls... it'll only help if you sail to the right...
That was a pretty intense finish. Nice job, guys. Several great finishes from the SA squad. I've been off my game a bit lately, and this one brought some of the intensity back for me today.
If you execute the gybe (or tack) in the same minute as the sailchange, there are two benefits:
-Both get executed with the same stamina, instead of the second one being executed with the stamina reduce from the first one.
-The percentage speed losses are compounded... so instead of getting two...
I screwed up. I was moving up despite sailing a real world regatta. On the way home, I did a gybe sumlutaneously with a sailchange to LG, which is beneficial if done correctly. When I got home, I decided to turn autosails back on. Unfortunately, 2 minutes later, I briefly sailed into more...
The stamina thing produces situations where going beyond ideal VMG angles can sometimes be better than short-gybing. I'm not very good at figuring out when to do it... I'm going with the herd on this particular call.
Thanks. I'm pretty good with using zezo.org for routing virtual races... and I've done plenty of real world sailing including some real world offshore stuff... but I've never actually used a router on a real world boat.
So... 11th hour went behind the scoring line after Biotherm had crossed it... Does Biotherm had an argument that they should pick up the point? Or is the scoring gate result locked in upon first crossing?
Over the next few days, we should see the "shortest course to Cape Horn" swing more and more away from south angles across the ice limit and Antarctica toward actual East courses... so hopefully the rankings and DTFs will get more useful. At least we finally got past the point a few days ago...
