My family sold the boat that's seen in the video on the beach. They had Frans Mass build it in 1984 with a Scheel shoal draft keel. In her time, she was a great boat. It has some IOR influence to her desogn but nothing extreme.
I’m trying to find a racing sailboat that was built in Thomaston, Maine in the mid 1970s named Sea Wand. It was a custom 46 foot red hulled sloop. She was donated to Maine Maritime in the mid 1980s. I have not heard of her whereabouts since then.
Remember Mount Gay rented armored truck and police escort to deliver rum to Champlains in 1977? Nobody had heard of it before that party but everybody remembered it next day
Grew up racing a Swan 44. It's a fast, seaworthy, robust boat. Only squirrely downwind in a blow. Many had their rudders enlarged to mitigate this problem.
B40 will be a lot slower, hobby horse more in seas and generally will be a disappointment in terms of sailing performance.
If you can deal...
The older I get the smaller and simpler the boat Id want to own. So I bought J80 this year as my retirement boat having turned 63. J/9 looks ok but at likely $100K -+ all up cost, not so much
Race on 1986 Baltic 44. Boat has Harken 2014 mid boom traveler. Loads up as one would expect when sailing upwind with wind speed 8 knots +. We use hydraulic vang to try to take load off but isn’t that effective. Ideas?
