What are the dimensions of your sprit? I have a removeable one that I'll be installing; Theory is that I can use 10% of my J (approx. 17"?) with only taking a -3 to my PHRF rating. The conversion should give me +6 to the rating so the net would be +3. Hence me being curious re: your...
Would anybody have a diagram for the J35 deck hardware layout? I bought a J36 and the deck hardware all has to be replaced, a setup straight out of the 80s. Has anyone here converted the J35 to Asym?
Hi Pauls,
I too am a new owner of a J36 and fixing it up for racing this coming season. You can get a Raymarine speed/wind/depth i50, i60 package for like 1,100. Find a used MFD, wire it up, and you should be good to go. My first boat was a J30 so I'm hoping they behave similarly. The J35...
Right?! I will measure today but I believe that to be true. There is even an access through the deck to the rudder post and an "emergency" tiller fitting. Given the substantial similarities between J35 and J36 and the success the 35 has had with a tiller configuration, I cant be the first to...
Does anyone see a reason why the Edison pedestal and wheel couldn't be removed from a J36 and a tiller be connected to the rudder post? The space behind the traveler seems adequate for a tiller long enough to produce the requisite mechanical advantage. Were some versions of the J36 produced...
.. and a new B&G 213 is 1k? Really!? My instrumentation is H1000, not even worth 1000 for the whole damn setup. Anybody have a used unit out there or know where to find one? Would another 10-pin wind transducer that doesn't say B&G work? I'm guessing that I'll shortly have to grit my...
I appreciate the help. Suider, the boat will be on my mooring over at Centerboard in SoPo come May, I'd certainly appreciate your help and am prepared to provide consideration in beer form. Thanks.
I appreciate the help. There were some penetrations to the sail-drives paint so that might account for it though it seems crazy to have the zinc completely eaten off in one season. It would seem that I shouldn't connect the "lightning grounds" (green wires connecting my shrouds and mast to the...
Hoping I might get by with a little help from my friends. Here's the issue. After our first full season with the boat, a problem has emerged. When we pulled her in October, it turns out the new sail drive zinc had been completely eaten away and the sail-drive housing itself showed some signs...
We were able to achieve some speed by picking our bow up when it was blowing. Surfing down waves at 12 kts in last years Monhegan Island race and kept the rudder in the water to fight off the round up. Point being that's why I'm bringing my questions here. Just because something worked for us...
Yeah, crew weight distribution can definitely be improved, still stacking folks like I was on the J/30. Luff tension was so loose because we started sailing 4-5 kt's of breeze. When is sprang up to 12-14, we neglected to correct for it.
Those photos are from the MS regatta this year. We were setup for super light conditions and then the wind came up pretty abruptly on our way in. We were carrying that light air spin right to to very edge of a beam reach which is why it might look funny. That main itself is in great shape...
Anyone know how to sail a Mumm 36? Because we just bought one! It seemed like the right think to do after reading the forums and being specifically warned that they're difficult to sail to their rating and chew up inexperienced amateur racers. That's us! We were loosing our maintenance war...
I have done several areas of re-coring where there was delamination and the core has turned "rotty" or sludgy. During this process I found plenty of core that was still registering moisture content with my moisture meter but were dry to the touch, still had plenty of structure and where the...
Could this method work for balsa core as well? Many area on my boat are still solid (no delam) but definitely carrying around a bit o' the ocean in my old J30. I'm cutting out and replacing some through hulls this year so I would have exposed core to run the vacuum line too and would drill...
