Big Lizard in My Backyard - Large Multihulls in San Pedro

MOD 70’s Argo and Orion are docked in San Pedro after their San Francisco to San Diego match race. Maserati should be coming to town soon. It sounds like they’re having a little issue with their visas. They’re hanging out in Ensenada until they get cleared!

    Islands Race Wx

I saw Sangmeister go live on Facebook right after dusk. He was there with one of his sons. My shop is about a mile away. I drove down and found them trying to wedge fenders in between BadPak and the dock. It was blowing 30 knots, with puffs into the 40’s. There was 2’ chop in the harbor...

    BLIZZARD WARNING*** For SoCal.

I think the band’s name is fitting for the conditions. They played up around the corner from Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club!

    Asymmetric set-up

Just freehanded it. Four layers of Pattern Mylar and outer layers of 10oz Dacron. For smaller sails, I like to go with about a 45° angle.

    Replacing leather wheel cover

Right after the red grips, did a large J-109 wheel for some radio shrink, and a pair of Farr 400 wheels. All in Black EVA. Had to build a jig to mount the wheels.

    Replacing leather wheel cover

These were the wheels that I did about a year ago. The owner was set on wanting red. I warned his BN that there was no guarantee on this project! The only thing suitable was a sheet of 2mm EVA foam, 36” x 60. I had to cut it into strips. The red seemed a bit less durable than the black...

Budget vacuum pump / gear (off the shelf)

It was a cool spring day. Helping a friend with an art project, non structural. It was laid up on a glass panel, just had to warm it up a little. Everything ended up beautiful. Not inexpensive, I have a large rotary vane vacuum pump available for purchase in SoCal. It does require 208 3Phase...

Budget vacuum pump / gear (off the shelf)

Have a Gast Vacuum Pump. Did a 5’ x 3’ panel with excellent results. They used to be relatively cheap at McMaster Carr, but they’ve gone up quite a bit.

Moving J/109 speed sensor to centerline

This is how I did several J-105 speedo’s. Cut a section of stringer out. Made a Fiberglass tube, about 5” diameter. Glassed it in. Bored hole, rebated core, filled with epoxy. Taped a stir stick at hull surface. Removed flange from speedo tube. Masked everything, buttered it up with thickened...
