Lot’s of upwind in difficult conditions where tactics played a significant role are a couple of the factors plus you are comparing two very different types of boats. One you can actually cruise in and has a fridge, freezer, hot water, showers etc (although Escoffier’s 50 doesn’t)and the other is...
I can tell you it has nothing to do with stuffing the bows, we have pushed the ORC 50 downwind in waves and also while reaching in the “death zone” and the boat is safe and fast. However, like foiledagain has said there is a tendency for the rudders to load up at lower speeds when you transition...
Most of the IMOCA’s, Multi 50’ and all the Ultimes, are using B&G hardware with either https://www.pixelsurmer.com/?lang=en overlays or https://en.madintec.com
Escoffier’s ORC 50 was using B&G & Madintec last summer before his capsize.
11th hour racing using pixel overlays
Not sure if releasing sheets would have helped if they did indeed get caught in some kind of fishing net plus the system has to be switched on, I am not sure we will ever hear the full story. And yes the boat does feel safe, it loves to cruise along between 15 and 18 and feels quite pedestrian...
The capsize in the RdR (Brieuc Maisonneuve) was an autopilot failure, boat was going upwind in 30+ Knots and the AP bore off resulting in the boat powering up and capsizing. Loic’s Escoffier’s capsize in July was again attributed to an AP failure, while going downwind in 30+ knots with A5 and...
I believe the correct name is Ti Ana hull #20 launched not too long ago, Regis Guillemot is the owner. I am guessing they used the same epirb that was registered to his other boat Hallucine which capsized in 2019.
Two capsizes I believe? First one caused by a UFO which they believed to be a fishing net? The most recent one during a solo race, downwind with the A5 and one reef in 30+ knots when the AP malfunctioned.
Arguably it could be said less challenging, less current, easier navigation ,no tidal gates, less emphasis on the human powered element. The inside is a great great equalizer which can certainly attest to. With the outside option it is just another offshore race with only a few boats able to...
Couldn’t agree more, I really don’t like the outside being and option as it changes what the R2AK is all about which is the challenge of the inside passage.
Absolutely agree with the overloading, I believe we discussed this on the dock before the start. That said we were diligently counting ounces we added and were very minimalistic with what carried onboard.
Randy - We knew this was a possibility going inside, it was a roll of the dice for sure. With massive flooding on the mainland of BC and extreme tides things didn’t line up in our favour, so why did we go inside? The decision to go inside wasn’t easy as our preference was always to go outside...
Thanks for sharing. Interesting to note that you are required to carry charts, not sure why that couldn’t be used as a means of navigation to get into Pedder Bay or have CCG escort them in?
Would like to see these polars you mentioned, sounds like BS to me. You forget that Idec, formerly Groupama 3, has been developed for over 12 years before the JV record, the Ultimes are in their infancy and will take time optimize. In the mean time, a reminder of G3 in their 2008 JV...
