Aaaah! 1996. US hosted the Olympics sailing in Savannah and won two bronze medals (in Europe and Soling.) It was the first time the Laser was in the Olympics and all the buzz was about Scheidt and Ainslie. Nick Adamson represented US in the Laser.
Harking back to the good old days when US Sailing ran a trial regatta in the US in each class to select the sailor or team to go to the Olympics, does anyone remember how sailors qualified to sail in the trials?
I think the last time that the US ran a domestic one regatta trials for Olympic selection (at least in Lasers) was for the 2008 Olympics. Anna Tunnicliffe and Andrew Campbell won the trials for Radial and Laser which were run in Rhode Island. There were 33 boats in the Laser fleet and 22 in the...
Let me clarify. The point I was trying to make was that "average" athletes of any weight - gargantuan or otherwise - are not good enough to go to the Olympics. You have to be an extraordinary athlete (talented as you say) to be in the Olympics.
My second sentence was badly constructed, It would...
Your average gargantuan size human would never qualify to compete at the Olympics in wrestling or boxing. You need to be an extraordinary gargantuan size human to get to the Olympics in those sports.
At the other end of the age scale, USA seems to be dominating the rest of the world in the Legends Fleet (age over 75) at the ILCA 6 Masters Worlds in Thailand.
And to all those folk around the world who like to mock Americans' love for the Sunfish, let's note that after his Olympic career was over, Paul Foerster raced in the Sunfish class and won the 2008 Sunfish Worlds. If the Sunfish is good enough for Olympics medalists, it's good enough for me.
As I recall, Xu Lijia was chosen as a child to try out for sailing because she was good at swimming. I think there are probably better tips on how successful sailing nations manage Olympic development programs that the US could emulate.
Right. Lijia (aka Lily) has written an autobiography which gives a detailed account of how China selects and grooms athletes from a very young age. As I recall, she eventually decided that to achieve her ambitions she need to hire a coach from outside the Chinese sports system. It's a good read.
I take your point. So it's kind of ironic that the Chinese Laser Radial Olympic gold medal winner, Xu Lijia, is 3 inches taller than the American Laser Radial Olympic gold medal winner, Anna Tunnicliffe.
Not that I am saying the Sunfish is anything like the Solo/OK/Europe/Sabre ilk, but... the Sunfish is an enormously popular "amateur singlehander" in the US that does fill the market niche of an alternative to Lasers for many people. It's used as a recreational boat, a learn to sail boat, club...
Just in case you want to qualify your country to sail a Laser in the Olympics...
There are a number of sailing Olympic Qualifiers for Paris 2024, which award quotas in the following order:
2023 Sailing World Championships
The event will take place in The Hague, Netherlands, from 10-20 August...
I received an email from a local Sunfish dealer last week saying, "We have an order of Sunfish heading our way and there are a few boats still available. Due to the timing of the shipment, these are the last boats available at the 2022 price before the 2023 price change. These boats are...
