Surprised. Could I ask where that figure comes from and whether the benefit of a group of sailors collectively hiring a container was taken into account? I also understand Moths can be dismantled into fairly compact boxes for air freight. Anyone know more?
I don't think it is a "move", as I understand it, the USA has been doing it this way for many years. Results don't suggest it is the best way to go about selection.
Daniel's results at the ICLA 7 U21 Worlds were not really scintillating. Can't find any international results for Thomas McCann. Not here to piss on anyone's wheaties, just saying.
Except accuracy, unfortunately. There's quite a lot of missing data, shown as zeros for extra confusion. Also it is only nationals attendances, which is a tiny fraction of overall sailing.
It has value as some kind of indicative tool for tracking health of given class but only if interpreted...
Nothing directly about sailing here. Move on if not interested.
Bio of an Eritrean cyclist is below, don't know if the same guy. Whether he met the description "poor kid" isn't really clear but I found the background on the colonial legacy of cycling in Eritrea surprising and interesting...
Yes. However I am also saying that the connection between numbers in grassroots sailing and medal performance is weaker than many believe.
Numbers sailing dinghies in the UK have also dropped over the last couple of decades, I believe. This is impossible to back-up with systematic figures but...
Correct. Once upon a time you chose a class, did well domestically, won a domestic trial, off to the Olympics, whoopee, on the podium. Those days are gone.
GBR has won Gold several times in classes that barely exist here, in some cases don’t exist at all. It is now about having a system to...
Team GBR sailing budget for Marseilles (sailing venue for Paris) is IIRC around £20M for the 4 year cycle. For a country of the size and wealth of the USA, it isn't really that much. The current USA AC effort would be several times more. If the USA had some useful Olympic sailors coming out of...
Here's the result
A small number of elite Olympic sailors in the UK do receive a salary, an "Athlete Performance Award" of order up to something similar to a UK average wage. In addition, they get coverage of costs to attend regattas etc.
A long but detailed read, not specific to sailing...
US sailing team. There are a couple of classes missing. Guess which.

And irrelevantly, the GBR ILCA-7 wannabes. Fuck me, they look young (this is a good thing).

Here's the results of the 2022 ILCA-7...
The last round of evaluations of potential Olympic boats included a non International class. So that isn’t an insurmountable problem.
A class applies for International status. It isn’t the case that WS initiates the process. It is a mixed blessing in that a lot of control passes from the class...
And 470s are also subject to development.
The kinetics you describe is called shagging. Never heard a sailor call it air humping. Citius, Altius, Fortius is exactly what it is. Sailing has an ambiguous attitude to athleticism which is out of place in the Olympics. As for the aesthetics, well...
I'm afraid not. Finn and Europe are examples of classes where a load of effort and money went into equipment development. As for the Laser, buy 10 masts and choose the best.
I'm not altogether sure about that. The 49er has had a positive effect, there are UK clubs with thriving 29er fleets. As for "validity of the competition", 49er helm and crew skills have proven transferable to other sailing arenas.
To pontificate, there's no consensus over whether Olympic...
It seems to attract "competitive parent", a species very much to be avoided IMO.
As it happens, I also once drove safety boat at a large and rock-star infested International Moth event. Great atmosphere, no crap. Make of that what you want.
