Spring Foiling Rally ‘24 in Savannah @SYC
To all SFOR ‘23 Alums as well as all aspiring foilers, I’m happy to report that we’re back on for 2024! The Savannah Yacht Club approached me recently to ask if we would like to utilize that first week in March that they...
Idalia-Savannah Update
My yard is a 1-day chore I'm loathing to clean up, but happy to report that all three UFOs survived. Just to prove it, Ben and I launched two of them on the post-hurricane breeze...
I can link you up with fellow SYC members who race Lasers. Guests are welcome to join in on all club racing and practice events. Launching is super easy from the floating dock straight into the Wilmington River.
First off, 2nd time sailing on the boat and foiling is FANTASTIC! Congrats. Only tweak I’d make in my previous advice is the order that you investigate since it’s your boat:
1) When on dry land and boat assembled, check that the undeflected wand has the actuator rod just barely not in contact...
Every time I get on a UFO other than mine, I assume there are going to be different flight characteristics. There have been a couple UFOs that I’ve flown that just want to climb…even after the wand is fully out of the water. If that is the case, move the main foil pin forward at least one...
In addition to Martin's suggestion of the body-drag, you can also just back the boat down like you do during the heisman except you actually steer the boat where you need to go. I use this frequently to approach my dock on high wind days -- takes more time, but far less risky.
Leaving the main...
Lloyd, I was clearing out my garage today and almost threw away the sheared rudder head when I realized it had the hold-up piece that I think is the same for the main foil...
If you haven't already bought or made a replacement, this one is yours for the taking if you want it. Just tell me...
Last week was a rare occurrence here in Savannah: five straight days of 20+ knots of breeze. Believe it or not, I had to take a knee on the fifth day as my body was starting to protest. On one day in which the winds were around 30+ knots, I decided to try out the small sail for the first time...
Dumpster Phoenix
A few months ago, friends on this forum who were vacationing in Florida let us know about an abandoned UFO they saw in a community dockyard. After several inquiries and Venmo payments, and diplomacy, and logistics planning, this mysterious early-production version landed up...
SFoR '23 UPDATE
I've always said you should foil with friends: it makes you a better foiler.
Thanks so much for all the participants: Ledge, John E, John M, Yichi, Kyrle, Cary, Zulmarie (and Doug!!), Joe, Julian, Jay, Lloyd, and Ben. I loved having all you guys down here. Thanks, too, to...
Trailer not required: just offload your boat on the grass near the dinghy ramp where it can stay for the duration of the event. Do please bring a dolly if possible; but if not possible, we absolutely can share dollies to get boats onto/off the water. If you bring a dolly, you may want to put...
WEBSITE:
Many people came together to collaborate on the design and function of a website that captures the knowledge dispelled in this forum as well as other sources to help all UFOers. It is a work in progress, but I hope that it will be useful to UFO foilers young and old. We will continue...
