Si-fi said explicitly they'd "rather win this race on the water" and he also mentioned looking at redress. Maybe I'm assuming too much but it feels like their initial assumption is that the repairs are too significant to turn around in time (by the way - what is the maximum period they can...
I saw that they did that - but not enough video, or close enough to say why or whether it made any difference. Will be interesting to see what the Race Committee make of it all.
It's like they missed the instruction about the extra loop? They've lost a lot of distance in just under 3 hours - from 0.2nm ahead to 5.8 behind with two gybes to put in. Very odd
I was wondering the same thing. Not sure what we gained from double points on this leg - and now the spread on the results table is such that it's realistically a two boat event for the remainder of the race. (Perhaps it always was!?).
Weekly would have been a luxury. Mainly it was a monthly service and in winter even that could not be counted on. They had emergency supplies for an extra two weeks - but sometimes had to wait longer than that! They all seemed to like the job though. And onshore they were well respected...
Fair Isle is between Orkney and Shetland.
The larger island (on olo.0815's post) looks like Sule Skerry - there's a whacking great lighthouse on it (and the smaller, to the SW, is Sule Stack, I believe). My wife's grandparents were Light Keepers - and that wasn't an especially great posting to...
I was confident the outright record was up for grabs but by this margin is seriously impressive - 640.9!
TM's earlier 4 hour run of 113.8, as noted above, is also astounding.
Looks like 11th hour back on track - sail change probably.
Malizia live data showing significant reduction in wind speed....but they don't yet appear to be picking up much speed.
Next 2-3 hours will be interesting (in fact the next 24 hours will be!)
The news update published on the OR website by Charlie makes me think they realise the writing is on the wall. Although I'm not sure how Botherm will sail on starboard and at least half the remaining distance will be on that tack.
Good to see Malizia cross the line first. They earned that win and it helps to keep the scoreboard at least a bit more interesting for the rest of the race.
Still a lot of following to do on this leg though. I'll be interested to see if there is anything up with Holcim-PRB - were those last...
