    S2 blisters have visually disappeared.

This boat sat at a slip for eight years with hardly a finger being raised, the owner being close to 80 and moved. When I pulled the boat out last month there were, maybe, 40 blisters ranging from dime to half dollar size. Quarter size was typical. The boat is a 1978 26' S2. I live in a...

5" disc sander is about perfect for sanding bottoms.

With eight holes in 60 grit paper, it really chews up blisters and old paint pretty fast. Nice and light is great for working above the shoulders too. While I have a large assortment of sanders, I won't even try one of the others on the bottom. Am I wrong? However, I would try 40 or 50 grit...

Whats wrong with coating the hull with epoxy?

On top of new paint? Seems the epoxy would: 1) Last longer and also protect the paint. 2) Be shinier and more slippery in the water 3) Add a strong layer of toughness. Sort of a gel coat for the layman.....

Problem feeling comfortable on my boat.

Cockpit is roughly 9-10' off the ground while sitting on the trailer. There is movement due to wind and myself.  There is almost no way that it would tip over. I think. Others have this problem while their boat is on the hard? Going to be a challenge to do all the needed maintenance until I...

Why do so many cruise the Caribbean?

They seem over regulated and over priced. Hurricane season lasts 1/2 year. It isn't particularly exotic or remote. There are a lot of people on the water. Pacific diving is often far superior. Is it convenience? Ease of returning home? Large variety of islands to visit? Shallow water?

    Toughest climb and descent ever?

You have to watch this to believe it: Touching the Void http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379557/ https://www.netflix.com/title/60033287 I once spent over four hours bleeding out next to a snowfield with absolute certainty that death would occur within 1/2 day due to hypothermia. The reason I am...

Netflix is highlighting 1998 Enemy of the State with all star cast...

https://www.netflix.com/title/18170222 This movie opened at #2 thanks to an all star cast among other things. The NSA was under a lot of fire at the time...for, gasp, various violations of civil rights. 9/11 happened a short time later and the various alphabet agencies have all enjoyed a well...

    Single handed mast raising gear?

I hired a couple guys, one who runs a sailing school, for demasting my 26' S2. Felt like I was getting crushed before I told them to "grab some of the weight". My legs are still aching... I don't think the ~90' rope with the 4 to 1 reduction pulleys were being used properly. It was kind of...

    Frozen steering on outboards!

This is an extremely common problem. Many do not realize until they have shoved off from the ramp. Spent two days working with mine. Will be sore for awhile. Required partial motor removal and air tools to loosen things up....remove them is more accurate. Then people want to know why I am...

Deep Water documentary, a tale of fools?

Found this on Netflix as a suggestion while looking for White Squall. It is a solo race around the world held in the late 60's. Nine experienced sailors and a brand new guy with an engineering background. Fellow thought he could win via the design of the trimarin they had built. The boats...

    Tranquility exercise for troubling times...

TRANQUILITY EXERCISE Just in case you are having a rough day, here's a stress management technique recommended in all the latest psychological journals. The funny thing is that it really does work and will make you smile: 1. Picture yourself lying on your belly on a warm rock that hangs out...

14' fiberglass dinghy on a cruiser?

Why? Because I already have the "dinghy/runabout". When I get the '57 40hp Merc running, it will be pretty quick with good cargo capacity as well. Will need plenty of "bumpers" to prevent rubbing with the sailboat of course. A quick dinghy allows one to stay away from the madness in the...

"Safe hull length" for a trip around Cape Horn?

We all know that Cape Horn is renowned for huge rogue waves. Heights of 100' have frequently been reported. People have also been known to exaggerate wave height a bit. My goal is a couple circumnavigations. I am pretty qualified to "fix" an older and larger sailboat. I have almost no...

Attaching long shaft 40hp outboard to 26' S2?

Bought a '78 S2 8.0 with the diesel removed due to overheating issues. I now need to move the S2 about 5 miles through the California Delta rivers and cuts (placed a help wanted ad for that offering $300). Clearly it needs a motor anyway. Last month I bought a group of outboards to "play with"...
