Inverted hydraulic vangs, problems, Revelations, ruminations, and esoterica....

I’ve expressed an opinion in the past that I hate hydraulic systems, because they always leak - either now or in the near future. But I’ve been unable to come up with an alternative which didn’t require extensive modification/re-engineering of the rig. So I have spent about one year attempting...

Anyone here using the Wakespeed 500 regulator? Having an issue....

I've been using a WS500 this season on my trawler. It replaced a Balmar 614 to solve the problem of the Balmar switching to float early due to varying house loads. I'm finding the WS500 doing the same thing, though for a different reason. The scenario is sometime in the latter half of the...

2K Max rattle can pot life

Trying some of the 2K Max PU in the can. Instructions say 24 hours pot life once the seal is broken. Has anyone tried refrigerating the can, and did it extend pot life? Sometimes works with other PU paints. I had some small things I needed to get painted, might be ready for some more tomorrow...

    Gaff batten termination

Sailmaker suggests at the head to have one batten more or less horizontal terminated in a batten receptacle and car, and then the gaff batten terminated in a receptacle adjacent and just above the car, but no car of its own. I have some concern that this will cause a hinge point between the two...

SiriusXM weather, Raymarine, the SR200, and Canadian Marine Zone Forecasts...

I'm trying to find the answer to the question, can I get the Environment Canada Marine Zone Forecasts on a Raymarine Axiom system with SR200 module and SiriusXM marine weather subscription? You'd think the answer to that would be easy to find, but it has not been. Raymarine doesn't know. "We...

Contender Fibercon Pro Hybrid vs. Hydranet Radial?

I'm thinking harder about a new mainsail as the old laminate one has become more or less a pond liner.  Some sailmakers are suggesting Fibercon Pro Hybrid as "just as good as Hydranet" at substantially less cost, Hydranet prices have apparently skyrocketed recently. Does anyone have good or bad...

Anyone know how to make an IP video encoder work for a Raymarine MFD?

I think the answer is it cannot be done, but maybe someone has cracked the magic handshake. Some of the older Raymarine support docs suggest that an Axis encoder will work, these are footnoted with essentially a "never mind....".

How far can vang pump be above tank?

Before problems occur. Obviously the tank above the pump is best. This is a two speed Navtec pump. I am contemplating moving the tank to solve a multiplicity of problems, only logical place puts the bottom of the tank about 16" below the pump inlet nominally. More on port, less on starboard...

How much pressure for gas/hydraulic vang?

Is there a rule of thumb for how much pressure is required in a gas vang? Obviously it depends on weights, sizes, angles, so what I am asking is, if the theoretical balance point is say 300 psi considering all that, do you charge it to 130% (400)? 200% (600)? Has to be enough to overcome seal...

    Balmar 614 temp comp trick

It has been suggested that the Balmar 614 can be tricked into switching to float voltage by applying a resistor to the 2nd battery temp sensor terminals. Essentially this tells the regulator that the battery is hot and it will switch to float voltage. Does anyone know what value resistor to use...

    Did I say I don't like hydraulics?

Yes I did. The vang cylinders have done an encore performance, puking oil down onto the engine again. Fortunately this time missed the turbocharger heat blanket but still soaked the saildrive gasket which took some cleaning up. I think it happened when I wasn't there, disassembled the shift...

    Trying to understand sail weights

It is becoming time for a new mainsail. I've come to dislike laminates, leaving perhaps North 3Di (maybe same drawbacks as laminate) or Hydranet radial. But I'd like to estimate the weight compared to laminate. Currently I have a Doyle Vectran Stratis sail, taffeta both sides, with Doyle...

    Galvanic intrigue

I brought a small dehumidifier to the boat today, thinking I would plug the shore cord in for the winter. Slowly converting to the mindset of the daysailer after years as the commuter cruiser. A little concerned about galvanic action, grounds, etc. (as the boat has never been left plugged in for...

An epiphany regarding faucet aerators and pliers

Ok, probably not as significant - "weighed in the scales of the New Testament" - as some other epiphanies.  But in the event that it may help someone: I have German made faucets on Anomaly, the aerators are 18mm diameter and have no wrench flats. They are polished chromed brass. Over the years...

    Ideas for outhaul strop

For years I have used a length of spectra webbing sewn to velcro, wrapped 3 times around, as the outhaul and downhaul strop on the boom. The sail has a ring and the boom has a hole through it just large enough to take the 3 thicknesses of 1" web. This works well, looks decent and tidy, but has a...

    Blue Tarp Users Manual

It has come to my attention that in some marinas, Blue Tarps seems to be an essential ingredient of long term derelict boat care. Unfortunately these are sold to anyone with no license of training required. I'd like to offer some tips for users: 1) Do not depend on the cheap grommets installed...

    Flir selling Raymarine

https://www.ibinews.com/mergers-acquisitions-and-exits/flir-to-sell-off-raymarine/35798.article Probably not a good thing for Raymarine. Too bad, because post Flir acquisition they are producing some nice product.
