    Kaneohe PacRims 2014

Nice video TG! The perspective with the camera on the boom really highlights the constant main trim required on a 14! Looks like you guys were doing a really nice job of keeping the boat flat and drama free. That squall looked to be no joke at all though! Hopefully I'll be back out there for...

    Kaneohe PacRims 2014

I hope everyone's having a great time there, getting lots of good sailing in and staying away from the reefs! I wasn't able to make it this year and am definitely missing being there! I'd much rather be sailing in Kaneohe than dealing with mud season here! Life gets in the way sometimes though.

Marrying someone who lives in the US with a Green Card

Nautigirl - I haven't had a chance to read through all the responses so far, so apologies if I'm a bit behind in info, but here's some quick info from my experience. My wife is from Montreal, so we just went through the whole process a couple years ago. The situation that you're talking about...

Winter Olympics - Your favorite sport?

Mike in Seattle, I've been using Lapua SK Standard Plus for awhile now in most conditions and have been very happy with it. For very cold races, I'll use Lapua Polar which works a bit better in those temps, but it's very expensive, so I only use that in especially cold races. In the summer I'll...

Winter Olympics - Your favorite sport?

Mike, the upper part of the straps are pretty stiff. You want them to stay open so that it's very quick and easy to put the rifle on your back when you're finished shooting. Any small improvement in range time is basically free seconds that you can save on your competitors without spending any...

Winter Olympics - Your favorite sport?

Don't worry, there's plenty of room for everyone - it may be biathlon, but you have to shoot straight if you want to win...

Winter Olympics - Your favorite sport?

Ok, did anyone else watch the Women's Pursuit yesterday in biathlon? Wow! that race solidly showed off everything I love about the sport. It's a pursuit, so your starting position is based on your finish in the Sprint from a couple days ago. Many of the normal favorites had a bad day there and...

Winter Olympics - Your favorite sport?

Well, it's the single most popular winter spectator sport in Europe, so gets very good coverage. That said, it isn't so much a network for the sport as a feed provided by a combo of the IBU (International Biathlon Union) and Eurovision. If you want some good examples, check out the Women's...

Winter Olympics - Your favorite sport?

I don't know about most sports, but for biathlon, the best feed I know of is the IBU/Eurovision feed: http://eurovision.digotel.com/ibu/index.html There's no commentary which is fine as long as you understand the sport - and a good thing if your alternative is NBC... I'm hoping that the feed...

Winter Olympics - Your favorite sport?

I'm going to have to go with Biathlon as my current favorite. Partly because I've been competing in it (at a much lower level...) for a few years now and it's a hell of a lot of fun. Partly because a bunch of the US team is from the area that I grew up in and I grew up skiing with their older...

    Composite guy in Seattle?

Don't worry - the 14 is definitely not too much boat. Too much rig maybe, and sometimes not quite enough boat for the rig though... But that's what makes them fun! Hendo does great work! You won't go wrong there.

    Used Laser question

Thanks again all. He ended up deciding that it was priced a bit high, but also that he'd be better off with a 2 person boat given his needs. I had suggested a 420 and he's also considering a Vanguard 15 that's for sale in RI. I think that will be a better direction for him than the laser.

    Used Laser question

Thanks guys. I told him that it seemed like a decent boat, but probably priced a bit high and that the sails & rigging would need to be replaced. I can help him fix the bow very easily. We'll see what he ends up doing. Talking to him a bit more, he's looking for something to enjoy on the...

    Used Laser question

A friend of mine is looking to get a laser and is asking me for advice on one that he found. Unfortunately for him (fortunately for me...), I don't know much about Lasers. But, I know a bunch of you guys do. So, what do you think? http://burlington.craigslist.org/boa/4039215473.html He's not...

Why can't the North East handle weather?

The north part of the north east handles snow just fine. It's the mid atlantic area (RI, CT, MA, NYC, NJ, etc...) that can't seem to get their shit together. I used to laugh living in RI when co-workers who drive 4WD trucks would complain that they couldn't get to work on mon. due to an 18 - 24"...

    Vendee Globe 2012

It looks like the weather getting to that gate is going to make things very challenging for pretty much everyone except ALC! And, looking at the tracker, even the gate wasn't enough to keep everyone out of the ice area. It's going to be very interesting to watch this race develop over the next...

Best Mixers for Drinks, and other favorite coctails

I haven't tried the "Q Tonic" or other brands of the sort, but did get a nice treat recently when a friend made a batch of tonic syrup (just add to soda water). I had no idea that tonic based drinks could be that much better! On the ginger side, I've been making my own ginger beer recently...

Wind Power without the Blades and Noise?

Mikewof - You have it backwards. The physics ALWAYS has to come before the regulatory side of things. It doesn't matter how easily you can get them permitted and installed. If the physics isn't there, they're still not going to produce any power. If you don't believe that, I'll sell you some...

Wind Power without the Blades and Noise?

Don't get me too far wrong though - I have no problem with wind power in general. When well sited (and using real turbines), the payback can be much better than most people realize. But, you need to use a good design and put it where it's actually going to do some good. Otherwise you're just...

Wind Power without the Blades and Noise?

Not completely - I'm a mechanical guy, so not as up on the piezzoelectrics. It sounds like there's a little misunderstanding going on in that sentence though. Piezoelectric materials will produce a charge in response to a strain and vice versa. But, they're not going to sit there and produce...
