Hey Tom, your complex multi-quote trolls are not being read.

No one here wants to work that hard.

The 1986 Plastic Gun PANIC

In a 2016 amicus brief supporting the U.S. State Department's prior restraint against the Defense Distributed company posting gun manufacturing files on the Internet, the Brady brief pointed out: "The UFA was passed in part in response to reports that then Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi was in the process of buying more than 100 plastic handguns that would be difficult for airport security to detect. Jack Anderson, Dale Van Atta, Qaddafi Buying Austrian Plastic Pistols, The Washington Post, Jan 15, 1986." Brady Center amicus brief, Defense Distributed v. United States Department of State, 2016 WL 704978 (5th Cir. 2016).

The words in the Brady brief was literally true—although a more candid amicus might have informed the court that so-called "plastic handguns" of 1986 were actually not "difficult for airport security to detect." A candid amicus might have also explained that the "plastic handguns" were Glock pistols, which are now recognized as common, constitutionally-protected handguns.
The UFA banned firearms that did not exist in response to false reports about a scary brown man. The more things change...

I remember the hysterics about Glock being "invisible to airport x-ray"

I saw an ad in a magazine in which the x-ray manufacturer

took a Glock apart  and separated the pieces in a briefcase.

Easy peasy for anyone to identify the plastic handle, the slide & handle lit up,

, count the rounds in the mag,, etc. etc.

, just another lie, covered up with tearful hysterics.

I'm not sure what that is but I suspect it's a target of censorship so my urge to spread it about kicked in.

I'm not sure what that is ,,,
What it is

"Machine Control Data" according to the  NC Programmer nerds who live in dark rooms and stare at screens all day.

I just call it a runfile .   Load into machine controller, push "Robots Activate" and the controller slave follows my commands.

(OK, alright,, it's really called "Cycle Start" ,, sheesh)

Above I said "do the NC programming for the particular Milling machine" applies to pretty well all the CNC machines

If -141 was going to be manufactured on a 3D printer, I would have to re-work runfile or it would confuse the printer.

In this particular system, anything behind the semicolon (;) is ignored by the machine control

, so "Human"  can be used to embed notes to the operator and/or myself

, so operator has an idea of what is happening  and will happen next

and/or I  have some idea of "whatinhellwasI thinking  when I did this"  if I need it a later time.

I'm not sure what that runfile makes   (OK, not really, but might have)
I'll bet the $15 hr manager of "Major 3D printing company Sculpteo"  has nary a clew either.

I concealed  the Part number  except the  "dash" 141 , and what it fits on.

:)   ,so I don't have to be chootin' any furriners or 'strayins who aren't SUPPOSED to read something that might be a target for censorship.

There may well be a couple Dangerous People on this board who could work backwards from runfile and draw -141 on paper.

They will know what -141 looks like, but not what it fits.

It might fit an evil wicked mean and nasty weapons system and certainly needs be censored  "for the children"

It might fit a fire engine, ambulance, fire boss  plane,  or any number of machines that are "Moral and Ethical"

and SHOULD be disseminated as widely as possible "for the children"

Uh Oh!

? what happens if -141 fits both ?

"top" and "bottom"  are often "fluid"

mat'l utilization and/or machine "set up" and/or qty,  etc.

, stupid NC machine doesn't know up from down

, stupid mat'l doesn't know what direction it's clamped in stupid NC machine.

LMAO. I love Uncooperative people. It was bound to happen.

Here is a book that you need to buy that many in the gun control industry would like to see banned. It is called The Liberator Code Book: An Exercise in Free Speech. The book is exactly what it says it is - the 3-D printing code for the Liberator pistol in book form. Think of the $15 cost of this book as a donation to the advancement of free speech.
It has been about a year since I bought a paper copy of any book but I think it might be time.
I was thinking this should go in the Pop Tarts thread because it's so ridiculous, but

Amazon Bans The Liberator Code Book

They say it violates content guidelines but won't say how.

This makes me want to purchase it even more. Starting to think everyone I know should get one for Christmas.

I'm quite fond of the Libertarian political POV, I just don't make the mistake of thinking that it actually works. Human beings are too contrary & selfish.
This comment is way funnier in this thread, where we can talk about how noted internationally dangerous libertarian Cody Wilson's gun plans are all over the world and the regulatory state is impotent to change that fact.

CNN has dueling headlines.

Amazon bans the sale of a guidebook for 3D printing a gun

That's the big headline. Of course, it's not true.

Amazon has banned a book that provides the code needed to 3D print a handgun.
That's the subheadline, which is actually true. And not the same thing as the headline.

Meanwhile, the perpetrator $peak$ out.

Amazon dropped the ban hammer this morning, took down my Liberator code book for containing "illegal" content.

What a crazy ride.

For anyone who hasn't followed along, I published the text of The Liberator's .stl file as an e-book on Amazon.

I didn't want anyone to buy it. But hundreds of people did.

On day 1, the book became the #1 New Release in Amazon's coveted Computer and Technology Education section.

By day 3, it was listed as the #1 Best Seller in that section.

By day 5, it peaked as the #3 Best Seller in the entire Education section.

And on day 6, Amazon took the book down and banned it for containing illegal content.

What a roller coaster of emotions.

While Amazon has yet to respond to my particular email asking for clarification, they justified taking down CodeIsFreeSpeech.com by referring to the Federal Judge's temporary restraining order banning anyone in the country from sharing 3D gun designs online. That is the only legal case they could possibly cite to declare this book's string of alphanumeric text to be "illegal."
I guess lots of us like kittens.

Meanwhile, I found that this morning trying to figure out where to buy a bunch of hard copies to give away at Christmas. Still shopping...

Attempted Censorship Extended

U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik extended his ban, first issued late last month, saying concerns about public safety and a potential spate of downloaded plans outweigh Americans’ First Amendment rights to post the files online.

“Plaintiffs have a legitimate fear that adding undetectable and untraceable guns to the arsenal of weaponry already available will likely increase the threat of gun violence they and their people experience,” Judge Lasnik, a Clinton appointee, said in his 25-page ruling.

He said the case raises complicated questions about whether computer files can be protected speech — but said for now he presumes Cody Wilson, founder of Defense Distributed, has a First Amendment right to publish the blueprints. But he said that is “dwarfed” by the potential harm.
The urgent need to prevent the release of computer code that has been widespread for years isn't all that compelling to me.

Now Cody Wilson will send you the naughty files on a flash drive and you can pay what you want.

He suggests ten bucks. But he'll only send them to US addresses because such files are only naughty if foreigners have them.

Previously, Defense Distributed had given the files away for free, globally.

"I’m happy to become the iTunes of 3D guns if I can’t be Napster,"

...

Wilson reiterated the move to sell is not motivated in any way by profit and that Defense Distributed remains financially stable. "We’re not desperate for cash, we’re just covering costs," he said. "I remember when Radiohead did this, they said they didn’t make real money for this… I don’t expect to either. There’s plenty of people who don't want this, don't care, until they see the Attorney General of Pennsylvania doesn’t want you to have it."

Throughout his initial statement and while fielding questions from the press, Wilson maintained his main motivation was First Amendment-related. He called out companies like Facebook and Amazon for previously censoring users from posting Defense Distributed file links (the former) or taking down books for sale (the latter) that contained code for the Liberator, the company's blueprinted handgun.

"Today I want to clarify, anyone who wants these files will get them—I’ll sell them, I'll ship them," he continued. "The free exchange of these ideas will never be interrupted. I’m also inviting the public to share their own files and share the profit with me.
I guess the kittens are going to have to shred the bag down to a molecular level before censors get the point.

I can't wait till this gets to the SCOTUS.  They've taken a pretty aggressive stance lately on 1st Am rights.

You're kind of missing the main point then, since Cody Wilson has said all along that it's about freedom of expression in the digital age.

Didn't the completely useless book give you the idea that shutting the fuck up about it is the very last thing we're planning to do?

Maybe I should put you on my Christmas list.

If you have one, then that's true.

But books that are not banned are of less interest to me, so I don't want one for Christmas.

Do you want a Liberator Code Book for your collection?

They are quite loud...and they are vulnerable, from every angle.

  • The gun research is all negative.
  • The courts hate them, based on an overview of the 900 cases since Heller.
  • For history, they made up shit and called it The Standard Model. (Ahem, which Tom can't discuss.)
  • Outdoor gun permits can be challenged, and SYG can be challenged as well.

***IV CONCLUSION p102

Heller said that self-defense was the “central component” of the Second Amendment. But the philosophical and legal assumptions that accompany that assertion demand investigation. This article has attempted to supply a more nuanced account of the historical and philosophical self-defense baseline than is provided by gun policy debates and legal opinions. It suggests that as a matter of common law history and political philosophy, the state has a far more active role in shaping this core right than is typically acknowledged. Of course, describing the location of the baseline says little about whether it should remain there. But the faint hope of this article is that, if we can at least agree on where we stand, we can devote more time discussing where we should go.

Hmmm. Caught in a swirly, with Tom Ray providing the sound track. Dogballs Forever with this guy...
