HP's New Metal Printer

A number of companies offer metal 3D printing, which creates products and components layer by layer with a computer-controlled system tracing its lineage to ordinary inkjet printers. But on Monday, printing giant HP announced it's entered the market with the ambition to dramatically lower prices, courtesy of a $400,000 product called the Metal Jet.

"We're really going to enable mass production for mainstream metals, in particular steels," said Tim Weber, head of 3D metal printing for HP.

When it's done printing, the parts are taken out and the unused powder is separated for reuse. The parts then undergo a heating operation called sintering that fuses the powder into a solid block. Sintering technology is decades old but complex, which is why HP has signed partnerships for this stage with two manufacturing experts, Parmatech and GKN Powder Metallurgy.

So I wonder if the fancy sintering tech overcomes this issue:

I know a bit about additive manufacturing, not too much, but from what I do know, metal powder, deposited and baked, will never make tooling of the quality of gently-cut cold steel, because it's basically amorphous, the crystalline domains in well-protected cold steel are going to win in hardness.

It might help, but I suspect you still can't get those tight, naturally-grown domains with it. And sometimes you want an amorphous structure, it might work for things like turbine blades where you have to work with a single grain anyway. And it might work for some guns. But tool steel, I'm pretty sure no.

Now, if they combine Laser Shock Peening with it, maybe then quench it, that might be even harder than regular steel without LSP.

I can't speculate if it would be suitable for the type of working loadings a barrel has.

Let the nerds do notched Izod, tensile,  etc.

If test numbers are reasonable, print a barrel.

The article said that sintering shrinks the part by about 15% as the glue cooks out.

So I'd guess that "about" 15% varies with the precision of the glue squirter and final machining would be needed.

I don't mean to always sound like Negative Nancy about printed parts, in some applications it could be "the right tool for the job".

On the other hand, barrel is "special" because it is a Pressure Vessel,  and material failure means high speed shrapnel 

Printing a barrel is going to be a very slow process in metal.

, and yes, "about" made my eyes bug out too, which means one  Print$  around 20% more material.

Sintering take  lots KW/hours,

and still needs rifling, and finish machine all surfaces ( like I mentioned upthread ).

Melted Rocks Method: Rifle Barrel

Go to the rack & grab a pre-heat treated bar of 4140 - 4150.

The gun drill takes 20~30 minutes to do minor diameter.

Broaching the lands & grooves takes some time.

Then to the lathe for outside profile, ream and finish chamber.

Lap the bore,  and air gage.

Bring in a big box of Donuts,  and the guys will have it waiting for you tomorrow morning.

and it won't blow yer face off, kid.

, just shows that I haven't been following the current state of the art all that much,  other to call out the book burners.

It DOES have rifling, I heard him ringing the steel. Article does not mention if any post print attention to bore. 

I was a bit surprised to learn he's printing Inconel.

Really tough stuff to machine,   the small parts baskets in heat treat shop were Inconel for withstanding hundreds of heat/quench cycles.

Interesting  that the barrel seems to be structural enough at 1.3k rounds,,  10k would give a bit more confidence.

Pistols run at way less pressure than rifles,  so there's a next step.

If you poke around on there, they mention that there was some post-printing "finishing", but they were adamant about no machining operations.

Just from the pictures it is obvious that they polished it..

But note all of this was direct laser sintering, not the "print metal with a binder and bake it later" that was mentioned in the thread.

The "bind and bake" process is good enough whenever "about 15%" is accurate enough or a good enough start for final machining but

they were adamant about no machining operations.

That's pretty cool. It's also almost 5 years old. It's amusing that they chose a 1911.

They are indeed printing a rifled bore with enough tolerance control.

I am familiar with 17-4 .  It is one of a family of "precipitation hardening"  stainless.

Defense Distributed and the Second Amendment Foundation, represented by Chad Flores (Beck Redden LLP), Matthew Goldstein (Farhang & Medcoff), and Prof. Josh Blackman (South Texas College of Law), have just filed a motion for a temporary restraining order seeking to block enforcement of the law.

You can't even have digital files saying how to make any component of a firearm, let alone a functional gun.
