We are located on the east coast of the US.

Currently we have an e scow and the class recently converted to the asail. I have a steady crew for races but it is a pain in the ass getting 4 people together to just go mess around. were seeing 15 to 18 downwind and i belive spending time in a 2 person asail boat boat will only help us go faster.

So... I am looking for a new toy.

Requirements:

  • fairly bulletproff so i can lend it out without fear.
    lightweight
    available on the used market
    hiking or single trap
simple to moderatly complex to rig
    budget is 5-7K
    should be on a trailer
one design racing on the east coast
board boats only due to depth.
able to handle 25+ when the scows stay home

We are leaning towards a 29er. I like the Melges 17 too but the prices are fairly high. What other boats am i missing?

The Melges 17 would be ideal for you as an E trainer although it won't meet all the req. You might also consider an inland 20. My dinghy sailing aprtner picked one up for less than your budget and it is reasonably quick. Sorry to say there aren't a lot of choices. You might also consider the dark side as I hear they have cookies.

Dunno about the centerboard boat part, not many of the new high performance boats go that way. Afaik the 29er has a daggerboard, though it is aluminum so it is sturdy

laser vago, super fun to sail or crew.

easy to rig, easy sailing, but goes really fast.

most dealers will take you for a demo sail

Sounds like you would like a 29er, if it fits your weight range.
Second that. They are fun boats in a blow, but the performance drops quick as you get outside the weight range.

How about a penultimate i14? I know there are 2 traps, but you can pick a good Bieker 1 up for under $3k. They are fast and fun, and will definitely help in the skills department. The downwind asail skills would be directly transferable

I'd love an old i 14 but ive allready got 1 money pit. It would have to be really cheap to justify the maintainence. a 505 would make more sense but i really want the asail.

I'll have a look at the Vago but it looks too new to be available used.

You might be able to get an old I14 for less than a 505. Most of the used 505's are either spent or you'll have to spend the bank to get one. Not much middle ground that I've seen.

Fretz, I started a thread a while back called something like "Semi-Hi Perf A Sail dinghy in NA" You should check it out. It mostly consisted of people trashing the idea of anyone ever getting something going.

You should also check out the boat I was thinking of. It's called an Active 15. You can see it at activesportsboats.com.

With the good exchange with South Africa, I was quoted a price of $7,500 fully rigged, w/o sails. A twenty foot container might fit five boats and cost around $2,000 to Newark.

Might be an option.

The kit version looks like a fun project.

Were leaning heavily towards the 29er. theres a few used ones within a days drive.
