2000 Versions

If you have ever searched for a particular Bible quote you'll find countless versions of it. Estimates are there are over 2000 versions of the Bible.

And many deep believers in the Bible will argue the version they believe in is the only correct version.

Which leads me to ask, How in the hell can any reasonable mind believe the Bible is the word of God when man has created so many versions?

There aren't very many true literalist. It's a fringe minority but they get a lot of attention because they they fulfill a stereotype.

Mostly, people just quote some passage out of context they think supports their point of view and then they get abused or validated accordingly.

Wait till you see the King Donald Version. It’ll be released in two weeks, right after the infrastructure and health care reform plans (both the best bigly, btw).

That's why I love when people say "well it's in the bible"

Well there are 54 versus of the bible, https://www.quora.com/How-many-different-types-of-Bibles-are-there-How-are-they-written

And like most documents, people edit it to say what they want it to say.

Since PA usually means 'Evangelical' when it refers to religion, then it makes more sense to talk about the New Testament, in particular.

Honestly, if you want to know what the New Testament says, then the most faithful version is the original Greek. The New Testament was composed for the small-folk of the eastern Roman empire and was deeply anti-authoritarian. If you were from that region, you knew exactly what all the parables meant and why there's so much allegory and metaphor. That's by intent. Its a lot slower read and is sort of like having to have someone explain the jokes in Shakespeare - but is a much truer version than King James, by which time, a lot of the more modern authoritarian stuff had been added. The original version is a deeply moving collection of ideas and its not hard to see why it was so transformative.

That also explains why books like Revelations were so controversial - That book is pretty clearly not by John and basically just fan fiction predicting the fall of the Roman empire. But it was included over significant objections at the time, because it gives the faithful something to look forward to.

If you're a deist, then the literal word doesn't matter. That's most Jews and Christians. If you're a theist, then it's a bit more problematic and frankly, none of the ancient texts hold up to scrutiny.

The thing I have heard a lot throughout my life is the Bible was written under divine inspiration. In other words, god told them what to write.

Now if god is perfect and all knowing, then there could only be one version of the Bible. The fact there's over 2000 versions says that highly flawed being - man - wrote whatever the hell he wanted at the time.

Conclusion: the Bible is the best selling novel of all time.

That question has actually been asked and answered for about 1700 years now. There's a lot of bad answers and a few good ones.

The best of the answers begins with three other questions:

1) Do you believe Christ existed?
2) Do you believe he was crucified?
3) Do you believe he resurrected?

If the answer to those is all yes, then the question of how to understand divine inspiration is tractable. Tolkien did a great job with giving a pop-culture version of the answer. Probably one of the best ever, IMHO.

If the answer is no to any of them, then there's not much to talk about - any answer is intractable and irrelevant.
