18ft SKIFFS – NSW CHAMPIONSHIP

https://www.facebook.com/Australian18Footers?ref=stream

Sunday’s Race 2 of the NSW Championship on Sydney Harbour is the last race for the 18ft Skiffs prior to a 3-week break over the Christmas-New Year holiday period.

The championship section of the season will commence immediately after the break when the teams contest the Australian Championship from 12 January to 9 February.

Then, the highlight of the year, the 2014 J. J. Giltinan Championship on Sydney Harbour from 1 to 9 March.

Although Sunday’s race does not count towards either of those championships, it is an important race and a guide to what may be likely to happen in 2014.

Much will depend on conditions as some of the leading teams have yet to get the best out of both rigs so far this season.

Defending champion, and Race 1 winner Gotta Love It 7 has shown great speed with her #2 rig, but is still to show the same level of performance with the new #1 sails.

The greatest threat to the ‘7’ team, Seve Jarvin, Sam Newton and Scott Babbage, may come from the consistent Mojo Wine team of Chris Nicholson, Mike McKensey and Ricky Bridge.

Mojo Wine won the 3-Buoys Challenge series which concluded on the harbour last week and displayed good form in all conditions.

Many teams are potential winners with the main contenders looking to come from Thurlow Fisher Lawyers (Michael Coxon), Coopers 62-Rag & Famish Hotel (Jack Macartney), Smeg (Nick Press) and Sydney City Marine (David Witt).

Micah Lane’s Appliancesonline.com.au is another with championship potential, but an interrupted start to the season will see her better performances coming in the new year.

The club’s regular spectator ferry will follow Sunday’s race, leaving Double Bay Wharf at 2.15pm.

2014 starts up this weekend, spring warm-up is over

AUSTRALIAN 18ft SKIFF CHAMPIONSHIP 2014

Defending champion Seve Jarvin and his Gotta Love It 7 team go into Sunday’s Race 1 of the Australian 18ft Skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour as favourite to retain the title, but it won’t be easy against a strong 19-boat fleet.

Following a late start to the season, the Gotta Love It 7 team has built up steadily with a string of good performances before the 3-weeks break over the Christmas-New Year period.

Jarvin, Scott Babbage and Sam Newton, who returns to the team after success in the AC on Team Oracle, will be put to the test by a number of strong teams with plenty of experience.

Two stars of the 1990s, Chris Nicholson (Mojo Wine) and David Witt (Sydney City Marine), along with Michael Coxon (Thurlow Fisher Lawyers), Jack Macartney (Coopers 62-Rag & Famish Hotel) and Nick Press (Smeg) pose the greatest threat to Team Seven.

The championship will be sailed over five races (on five consecutive Sundays) from 12 January-9 February, and is the main lead up to the JJ Giltinan Championship, which begins on Sydney Harbour on 1 March.

Hopefull, the poor racing conditions experienced during the first half of the season have gone and the fleet can get down to good sailing in the traditional summer North East winds.

Scott Babbage won the Aust Moth Nationals on Wednesday, flew home from Yeppoon Thursday to give his brain a few days to slow down for the 18 nationals.

..great coverage,,,and some HOT tight reach-action!

..what's the biggest fleet to date?......they're talking of a potential of 40 boats for the Giltman,,bright future for 18's!

...can't imagine fleets were that big in those good-old-days

A bit like the 12 Interdominions that was capped at 12 boats from each country (we came 13th in one year), then it was made an open championship and hit a heady height of 50 boats in 2004/5

The 1983- 1984 season JJ had 28 boats which was a few more than the year before,...........blah,blah.................................

...............................a great way to decimate a class................... ......... ............blah,,blah...............
.

......so a simple answer would be(?)....

...........no ,,there's never been more than a ______ boat fleet for the Gilt's,,or any -18'er- event

............it seems like the class has -gotten over- the 'decimation'......why not yewww???

Would love to see a U.S. Fleet develop. I tried to buy one in SF to no luck. Worked on it for a few months. WORSE ......no one wanted to sail it with me cause "too crazy." Bunch of dorks. Sweet boat, glad doing well. Thanks for the videos. I enjoy them.

Interesting pic, the forestay prod really seems to straighten the mast between the two spreaders. Strange the mast still has a flat spot even though it's offwind and the forestay tension is low.

THese new HM mast are unbelievably straight, as evidenced by Lumix not having to do much to their luffround to change from a wing mast to a conventional mast

So whats the crack with the forestay prod then? Getting some square top - ness onto the Jib without losing luff length or having hounds unacceptably high?

I reckon (no basis) that there will still be a sh*t load of forestay tension downwind, and you don't have to deflect that tension much to be pushing a decent load back into the mast which would affect the mode shape.

Dan

i suspect its to minimise the span of the luff wire as much as practical without closing off the gap between the mast and jib top. How much poke is used will increaase the moment that straightens the mast at the hounds.
