Moth Worlds 2022 start tomorrow in Argentina. Pretty stacked fleet given most of the AC guys couldnt make it. Who do you have to win overall, top female, top amateur?



I have not sailed in Argentina, but looks windy, always good for Moths! Also, a lot is being talked about with the sail from the club to the race area, anyone been there and know the deal? Lots of commercial traffic?

Grew up sailing there.

Usually windy, unpredictable weather patterns. Very uncomfortably choppy due to being a river often tide against wind.

They are sailing out of a club with a access to the river that is the old commercial channel - partially with larger vessel traffic but just a long uncomfortable channel between 2 seawalls.

The club is lovely but for small dinghies it's a miserable exit. San Isidro area clubs have easier dinghy water access.

I love my Rio de la Plata, and yet I expect it to be tough on small foilers.

Dylan fletcher will be hard to beat.. he's too good, and with so much training for the event, compared to the other top guys.

kit-wise, i think there may be a new small foil on the aerocet, and it will be interesting to see the camberless north sail some boats are using (all black sail). not sure there is a lot more new stuff. we will see

No cams, they have split battens with a piece of material between the battens instead. Goal is to get the sail to be lighter.

Race 1 yesterday was light, the DNS's were the sailors who couldnt cross the starting line within 4 min of the starting sequence.

I was told there is a new V7 big high lift foil coming for the Biekers, I wonder if those top guys are running it or the current V6.

One windy 16-20kts race today. Again lots of DNSs, but less then the day before. US Class pres took home the win in the only race, guess that training in SF paid off!

let's see if today some more "normal" racing starts. few fast guys still far from the top.

Can you elaborate?

I had a sleeve-luff sail in 1968 & 1969 (before the advent of camber inducers) and the forward end of each batten just slipped into the extruded track on the aft part of the mast. This was slightly different from the recommendations of sailmaker Garry Fogg

I’m not sure I can? I have a North Helix sail on order. I’ll post pictures when it comes in. Rob Greenhaul said I don’t need a new mast, there is a piece of sail tie like material between the ends of the battens that keel the mast from splitting the batten all the way? I’m not sure how the mast pops on/between the battens. I’ll figure it out when it shows to.

Excuse my terrible Apple Notes drawing, but from what I under stand is as the following:

Mast: white
Barrens : red
Sail: yellow
Material between the battens: yellow.

The North sail Rob showed me last April had two battens in separate pockets at each batten location, and at the front end of each pair was a piece of webbing between the two. The webbing was slack enough to wrap around the back of the mast, separating the battens to the sides of eh luff pocket.
These are very innovative sails. Almost completely made on the holding machine. The pockets are created by inserting strips of release film between layers of laminate and even the luff pocket is molded with a sheet of film separating the two sides. I did not hear how the front pocket end tapes get added but it has to be during the molding.
The only sewing is at the corners, leach, foot and the front seam of the luff pocket. Not a lot of labour but a lot of machine hours.
I am sure that in the subsequent six moths there are more developments.

EDIT: I saw a newer version of this sail today and there is small solid camber inducer type fitting joining the two battens and no webbing.

Worlds is over, DFS won in the new Aerocet! Congrats to him! As it always seems to happen in Moth Worlds, top 10 was pretty stacked!

Both Aerocets were top 10, rounded out by lots of Biekers and one very custom Exocet. Looks like no consensus after Worlds that one boat is clearly faster then the others.

That might of been incorrect. I got bad info. I believe one of the Brits in 16th, 17th or 18th was on an Aerocet?

Simone Salva, 3rd overall, was on an Aerocet with Lennon sail and CST rig. great performance by him. I sailed with him a couple of days in september, before he shipped the boat to Arg, and he was really fast and consistent in the manouvres.

So happy for him, he did a lot of training to perform well, and he really delivered in Buenos Aires in not easy conditions

Next Aerocet was Rob Greenhalgh 7th (with north rig)

I understand Rob shipped a different boat from UK and the custom boat remains in Sydney. It was way too expensive to ship boats from Aust, so no ons did.

yup I guess rob took delivery of one of the first batch of aerocet in july at the euros

@17mika has it right. Aerocets placed 1,3,7. Rest of top ten Biekers. GBR skipper in 18th sailing an Exploder.
