I think his point is (at least as I understand it), is that you should win if you have the fastest boat, and therefore perhaps it is maybe less of an achievement, and more 'expected'?

However, I think Comanche was pushed quite hard this race. Given the proximity of the other three supermaxis, one of which who was out of phase with them, if they had one slip up, or unfavourable wind shift, they could have been toast.

Well done to them for hanging in there and sealing the Line Honours win (y)
agreed. goodvibes just hates anybody with money. that being said, AC 2-3 years ago would have gotten beat, they have REALLY figured out thir modes, and will continue to be very yough to beat in any race.

What next for the narrow boats?

I drew up this a few years ago, slightly tongue in cheek, when I heard BlackJack was going under the knife, slicing off some stern, adding some bow and keeping the same deck:
Hmm. Even with a scow bow it’s not a winner. Comanche RM is 2.2x that of BJ - that’s a direct quote from someone deeply involved. Its whole sailing mode downwind is quite different to the other boats. With a keel axis tilted at 6 degrees and dagger boards canted inwards, Comanche heels over and foils like a VOR 65 at speed. You can see that clearly in images and video - the front half of the boat rides along in the air.

Props to LC for keeping up in this race as it doesn’t foil at all.

The narrow boats don’t foil at all either. Could be a possibility in theory but the mods required would be huge and it’s unclear whether their narrow beam would allow it to happen. WOXI ditched the DSS foil pretty rapidly a few iterations back.

Even if it worked and they could foil downwind, the narrow boats would still get caned in heavy upwind and reaching conditions I suspect.

^^^^ I am sure that you are right, but how much faster would the narrow boats have to be to close the gap in some conditions and still be superior in others?

On 2022 results, ~ 3% faster. Not impossible.

It's definitely interesting this year and I guess there are a few different ways to look at it, the two simplest of which seem to be:

- Were LawConnect and Black Jack blistering fast this year to stay so close to Comanche?

or

- Was Comanche actually being sailed far from her optimum and in fact quite slow?

^^^^^ A bit of both I suspect?

Could be.

I mean it's always tempting to say 'oh well the conditions didn't exactly suit Comanche'.

But then, they did suit the other wide boat, LawConnect?

And they also suited the complete opposite design narrow boat, Black Jack, too?

Nah, I don't buy that.

So probably probably as you said, a bit of both.

If this is Comanch 'optmised' then Law Connect and Black Jack have done a stellar job to improve their boats and stay on the pace.

Well done guys (y)

No one has mentioned that both Comanche & Law Connect have changed their primary choice of sailmaker as well over the last couple of years or so.

Sail makers are going to have a good year, just saw a boat about 40 mins ago nearing the line with a storm sail where their main once was.

Trying to work out if it's Sail Exchange that is anchored in Binalong Bay after they retired on the Breakoday Bay Of Fires webcam. IF you are going to retire from a race, it's not a bad spot to throw the anchor out.

Would be interesting to see miles traveled.

Comanche is obviously faster, but sails hotter angles.

Are you sure? It seemed as though Comanche, LawConnect, and Black Jack were all sailing pretty similar angles from what we saw on the tracker, and Comanche was only just a bit faster.

In fact for most of the race they seemed to struggle to stretch their lead over the other two.

The first double handers are nearing the finish with the 52' Ocean Crusaders J Bird leading the Jones 42 Minnie with 6 miles to go.
2H IRC leader Mistral is only 3 miles back and looks unbeatable.
The SF 3300s have been stuck in a hole north of Tasman Island but could benefit if the E/NE breeze freshens overnight as forecast.
