Thanks. They have a couple of close matches but to buy owner would rather get a laminate / membrane one made to fit. We borrowed one off a FARR44 but that was a touch too big, so cruiser racer 40’r or 35’r race boat dimensions.

Roughly
Luff 12-14m
Leech 10-12m
Foot 3-3.5m
I have a No. 2 north carbon Jib that is roughly that size you can borrow

Awesome job @Stanno ... kids will remember this forever.... which gives me an idea..... why don't the CYC in conjunction with Australian Sailing have an open house day / arvo / night at the CYC for all Australian sailing club members to walk the docks and chat or view the boats with a team rep ...? We are all struggling to get new young sailors to the sport and this could help..... just a thought

Why would AS want to do that when they are actively encouraging short handed racing through the implementation of mandatory sail passes? 🤪

What's wrong with Sail Pass...?
Sail pass is ok as a way to universally advertise to non sailors that they are welcome to come to a club to try sailing.

Forcing yacht owners to effectively charge or pay for family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances to race with them is a disgraceful policy.

It’s all about boosting paper numbers for When AS goes cap in hand for government money.

That's the list from 2018.. not sure where the latest is available.

Done at least 1 with 4 of the top 10!

There are some great blokes on that list.

Also done at least one with 3 of the ladies on the 10 Hobart list (& doing her 10th with a new entry on to the list this year).

Good sailors (& partiers all).

Crew lists are up on the site.
Interesting to see who is on what this year. Looks like Alive has had a bit of a generation change.

I don't know the ins and outs but for us at Cronulla it works.....
Too many owners were letting crew sail for way too long as a guest with no membership meaning no insurance (THAT word).
Now we have "On Board" so all boats need to declare crew for the race with their contacts in case of an incident, which unfortunately happens from time to time.
If a person sails more than 3 times they need to join our club which automatically gives them SA membership.... which for us works. Sail pass is free allowing newbies to try (3 Times) before they buy.
Do i think SA could do more for the money for the individual sailor, yes but they are very helpful and good value to us at club level helping with training and advice in all aspects of running our club.

@terrafirma thanks for the list.... I'd say Mothy and Magnus H get the chocolates

Pretty sure that those too many owners all had insurance...
and that the AS Insurance is not only shit, but is also activated after any other insurance. So if you have Income Protection or Trauma Insurance you won't get anything from AS

AS use the Insurance aspect as though it is an issue. I can only remember one incident that led to a personal injury claim in 22 years. Obviously there have been more, but someone seriously injured needing long term care will still have to sue for the owner's third party insurance.

My main issues are firstly, Australia is the only country in the world to have this Rule 46 prescription. Secondly as an owner I want to be able to take out whomever i like, whenever i like without having to either pay a fee, or even if free, give my crew's details to an organisation that most likely does not have a strong Privacy policy. Thirdly, AS is only doing this for one reason. The more "competitors" in the sport of sailing, the more money they get from the Government - for the Olympics. They don't need the income from SailPass - they want the increasing number to get money for something that 99% of sailors are not involved with. It is a con, nothing less.

I’ve never been to your country, through know many people. Pictures of various places look amazing. But this policy of requiring membership in a club after sailing three times is utterly fucking absurd. Even US Sailing isn’t this fucked up.

Just to make sure I'm following this --- every crew member (not just the skipper/owner) must join a club to be ON a race boat?

Yes, and the 3 race rule no longer applies either:

Australian Sailing prescribes that, from 1st January 2022, all persons on board a boat while racing shall be members of a Club affiliated to Australian Sailing and have an Australian Sailing number, or hold a valid Sail Pass, or if an international competitor, be a member of club affiliated to a World Sailing recognised Member National Authority.

SailPass is a way for AS affiliated clubs to issue a temporary membership to crew while racing that satisfies this prescription. However, it's at the club's discretion whether a SailPass is free (or free for n number of races), and in practice they charge money for them.

When I was last visiting Australia it was at the beginning of the SailPass rollout. I would just sign up for a SailPass via a club that provided them for for free which satisfies the AS prescription. i.e. you're insured, and your details are known in case something goes wrong.

But the problem is some clubs will go further than the AS prescription in their NOR and specify that it needs to be a SailPass issued by the organizing authority of the race (e.g. RPAYC does this), and then they charge for SailPasses. Which essentially means that for some races, the skipper and all crew members either need to be a member of an affiliated club, or they need to pay the organizing authority for a SailPass to race.

and that the AS Insurance is not only shit, but is also activated after any other insurance.

Your comment on AS insurance and when it's activated was not the case from my experience and incident which unfortunately was a big one.... I can't speak for others and their dealings with AS
We all would like to have anyone we like on board to race for free but how does a volunteer club like ours exist if only the owner pays membership and fees...? Sporting codes all charge for either membership or participation AFAIK

Why should a sport like sailing, as opposed to all other sports, be free...?

No... this is where sail pass comes in but how many free rides should one be given before they join....? Serious question
Background on my opinion : My club has no paid staff. We have a building that requires fixtures and fittings + maintenance, water, power, internet / website host, 4 support boats ($150,000aud) + maintenance and fuel, marks / buoys, a paid tender driver and starter + helper, crane (J24 and Etchells)
The cost of the above is paid for buy memberships, race fees, mooring rental and hardstand rental.
Now i'm not sure how else we can balance the books if crews are not paying members....?
Am I missing something here...?
One last observation.... It seems to me that the criticism of AS often comes from people that aren't involved in the day to day running of the club. Which i get.
I can't speak for other clubs but I do know that AS has helped our club every time we ask...

I belong to a similar club - we make a decent profit every year, and have done for most of the 150 years we have existed. We have never, and still don't need crew to be members to survive. Many crew have become members, but of their own volition. I can't speak for your club, but to me the issue is your club management if you need crew to pay.

Name one other sport where one person supplies everything and offers anyone the chance to compete with potentially no skill? AS have said when you play golf, you have to pay. How can you compare them? A sailing club doesn't supply the harbour or the ocean. How can you compare sailing to netball or football? It is a really poor comparison, to hide the worse reason for SailPass, and that is more money for AS from the Government.

And just because other sports require membership then that means sailing must? I repeat, we are the ONLY country in the world that has this prescription. If this was in the best interest of the sport, then why doesn't NZ do it? Or the UK, France or Spain?

So why should it be free? Well for the crews why not? The owner is paying thousands per year, why should the crew pay as well? I do not see anywhere a group of owners saying to AS - make my crew pay - the freeloading bastards!

And then AS change their entire constitution so that the club member has no voting rights and no say. The club is the member, and the bigger the club the better. At least in the past you could challenge for positions to create some change.

And as for your comment regarding criticism coming from people that aren't involved in the day to day running of a club - well I can only assume you live in a bubble - pretty much everyone that has commented on this issue are either serving, or past serving directors or volunteers of their club(s).

You are in the minority to hold supportive views of the AS Prescription to Rule 46.

Luckily, I can just ignore it as far as my sailing is concerned, but it is very sad to see a sport I love go down this path. Worse is that it is based on lies and misinformation.
