The annual moth worlds post for any related discussion.

Pre worlds event UK Open starting today.

Looks like there will be a variety of competitive designs that have had more time to iron themselves out.

Plenty of good sailors which should make for interesting results.

A few interviews here: https://www.youtube.com/@jonemmettsailing

Some new gear mentioned in the interviews. Rudders in particular. Would be great to see some pictures.

Hopefully the video coverage is better than the last few years.

UK nats day 1 results - big breeze

Guys from down under and from US seems fast in the breeze! + Joan, that did some training in garda, is litterally rocket fast in the breeze, so not surprised to see him on top.
But weather for the worlds seems more like lighter seabreeze, so everything could be quite different results wise.

regarding foils, I understand some people had some quite expensive titanium machining done. not seen photos, though.

Glad to see those Biekers got priorities. Top Navel engineers, eh?

Here's the drone footage from the racing. Gotta say I miss the banging the corner-style commentary. :)

I find it strange how Expoder makes absolutely gorgeous A-Cats and their Moth is... well, not pretty.

I think the Explorer looks better then a the Aerocets, but no one asked my opinion.

Hopefully the class brings back the Bang the Corner style commentary for NZ 2024. Maybe there will be some on the water commentary once worlds starts?

I heard about fancy metal rudders too. The NZ boys are awfully quick, so maybe there is something behind them.

Anyone know if pre-worlds has a drop? That will change the top 10 up with a few people getting 55s

Guessing it's just a rudder horizontal. I admit I have considered doing it also. Thought it should be efficient for one off designs. Cost seemed a little expensive when I looked at online quotes but imagine it probably isn't too unreasonable compared to current foil prices if you know someone who can do it.

I wonder what it would take. I know a guy with a CNC…

Very cool to see how the results show the Make, Model and Year of the competitor boats. Here is a pivot table of them. Some people need to learn how to spell Bieker.

Interesting to see the relatively even distribution of Mackay and Maguire made boats from many years. They both average about 5 boats a year in the entries. eXploder has the most from 2023 which I would think would surprise no one. This is probably a more meangiful table that could still use a little data cleaning:

I think it is really interesting to see the Pre-Worlds top 10 boat/builder spread was as even as it could be. 3 Biekers, 3 Exploders, 2 Swift, 2 Aerocets. Granted it’s Pre-Worlds, and people look races off, but still really cool to see so many platforms (and sails?) fairly even. Are we in a spot in the Moth class where you can pick the boat that works best for you and not have to sacrifice speed?

It’s a huge bummer that Chicago SailGP conflicts with Moth Worlds. That’s would be 20 more REALLY fast moth sailors in England.

Will this worlds be the final steak through the heart of the Mach 2?

After the second day of no racing this is kinda like the last AC where we had a couple of races low riding as the teams all left the code0s on shore.
The switch to the DS sails have gained a couple of knots of boatspeed but now they need more wind to get going.

What is the wind speed difference for getting on the foils for a DS and a more traditional sail? 2kts? Idk if that’s the issue. I’d argue 50% of the fleet isn’t foiling at 6 or 8kts, so the sail difference doesn’t make that much if a difference
