Hi y'all,

Looking at buying a yacht in the Med ( Greek islands) and looking for feed back on best cruiser up to 40' with 6'4" headroom in the shower, galley, areas.

Got to be Glass construction, open transom, twin wheel, and well built low maintenance.

Will be liveaboard for 180 days a year.

Keen to get feedback on what you recommend and why.

Are you going to keep in the Med and sell in the Med or buy in the Med and keep / sail to wherever home is  Options differ.

And where is home with a name like that and a West Cost id on your log in?

Not sure yet, buy in med and use every northern summer for as long as we can then who knows.

ORC certificates also say around 116.

Which is not bad, but also not that great for that size, let me add.

Try to see a Salona in that area, even if that means looking in Croatia.

Most offers you find down there are former charterboats and who knows what they've hit.

Salona's at least have a bit more beefed-up keel design with an integrated steel grid.

How old and budget?

I bought a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40 in Greece and loved it. I soloed it mostly and was very comfortable sailing it no matter how hard the Meltemi was blowing (up to 50knots)

Was easy to set up with all lines leading to the cockpit so I could put in 3 reefs without leaving the cockpit.

ok, with that budget you could get a fleet of SO40's...

Any particular reason for up to 40 and not bigger? My prior experience was with 34 ft and was a little wary of going to 40ft. If I was going to do it all over again, I'd go bigger, 45-50.

If you are anchoring out or going to town quays, size is less of an issue than it is living out of marinas. When you doing long days island passages it does not hurt to get there quicker. I highly recommend a water maker with a decent l/hr rate so you have a reliable quality water quality and don't have to run it so long.  Also a decent sized battery bank. The bigger the boat the less of a relative weight increase for the comfort things.

My main reason was marina berth sizes/ costs when back in NZ summer....  Are dry hard stands done by length?

Would like longer. But 40' is fine and ..   you're right the SO40s are cheap as chips and would do the job.

Do they have 6'4"+ head room?

How easy was you're buying experience? Did you deal with a broker ( Greek or other?) Did you need a skippers cert for purchase?

I bought a privately listed a UK registered. I was a bit wary and unsure of the process so I engaged a Greece based broker to do the paperwork. No cert was needed to buy.

Ok, that makes sense for keeping the size down. I think the stands are done by length, but there are yards in Preveza and other places that just do hard stand storage and they are economical.

I'm 6'1" and there was plenty of space above my. My uncle who is 6'4" or maybe taller also had room also.

One thing I suggest it to think very carefully about how you are going to use your boat once it's back in NZ. When my SO40 got to Melbourne, all I used it for was club racing. I stripped out all non fixed cruising gear and was looking at buying carbon races sails. In the end I decided it was better to sell it and buy a race boat.

Contradicting what I wrote earlier, If I was to use hindsight, I probably should have bought a Sun Fast 40 with the taller rig and deeper keel, but otherwise the same.

With your budget you certainly can find the perfect boat for your requirements.

BTW the twin helm and open transom (or at least walk through on SO40) is the way to go in the Med

I'm also looking at buying a boat in the Med for cruising, then maybe sail home downunder to either Australia or NZ. Looking slightly larger around 45ft so I can more easily fit all those cruising options like solar, bigger battery bank, water maker etc.

My question is how hard can you typically argue the price down?

Sorry I wasn't very clear. I'm leaving the boat in the Med but will return to NZ for summer. Are hard stands in the Greek islands charged at different rates. I had a mate who found one on Paros that was cheap as.
