... That being said, these boats are fat, heavy turds so I seriously doubt that there is any speed benefit from the changes. Perhaps long term durability.
Except there's a claim that these boats are 30lbs. lighter. (See the other thread on this subject, in Dinghy Anarchy).

Doug Halsey, I just read through that thread. 30 lb would make a difference for sure. If I had a hanging scale, I'd go weigh our cheater boat just out of curiousity.

What's the difference between a 420 and a club 420?
About 50lbs...the hull weight of an I420 is 180lbs, minimum hull weight of a C420 is 230lbs. The I420 also has a rig that can be bent and tuned. The C420 is purely a U.S boat, not recognized by World Sailing, and is frankly inferior to the I420 which sails more like a youth 470 trainer with many more more tuning options. One of the reasons the U.S is behind in Olympic development IMO. The only advantage to the C420 is the supposedly longer hull life and increased durability when used as a fleet boat, but I would argue that with proper build techniques you can get most of that in an I420.

I do agree with the decision to ban these boats, but it does suck. It kind of sound like PS2000 were trying to get away with 1 hull for both or they made a mistake and shipped I420 hulls...

Infusion is goi g to be heavier and more resin rich than a carefully handlaid laminate.
Bullshit.

There are people playing dumb acting as if they're innocent victims when it was patently obvious to anyone coaching the hulls were cheating the OD.

Nothing to do with production advancement or new technology. Just cheating.

Careful wet preg bag job I meant, seeing reference to open molding, could be emissions but probably stiffer.

open molding typically would exclude vacuum bagging. There may be variations in the usage of the term, but I suspect that the class rule excludes any vacuum bags, it would seem a little ridiculous to exclude resin infusion but allow vacuum bagging.

Anyone out there with access to the constructors manual who can confirm this.

Mind you I would also tend to agreed that infusion should be allowed for new hulls going forward, if you are going to required polyester resins, you should also allow a process that keeps the styrene in check.

The I420  class rules specify coremat, not soric. I used to be a licensed I420 builder.

By definition a bag closes a mold. Wet preg open molding with coremat can be tricky for controlling weight.

Hi Sam, I did the 420 Worlds in Annapolis in 1984. here's a question for you with regard to the Club 420. Do they pay any royalties to anyone or do they figure that it's Ok to steal the design of the Worlds most populous intermediate dinghy?

Honestly I have no clue, not my battle to fight either.
