SAN DIEGO — Authorities say a Coast Guard patrol boat has collided with a recreational boat while a Christmas light parade was going on in San Diego Bay, leaving at least six people including a child with serious injuries.
San Diego Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque says all 13 people from the two boats in the Sunday night crash have been accounted for. He had no specific details on the injuries but said they were all considered major traumas. He said all six people who were hurt were taken to University of California, San Diego Hospital.

It was unclear whether the civilian boat was involved in the Christmas parade, but the 33-foot Coast Guard boat was on a routine patrol.

Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Josh Nelson says the crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m. He says an 87-foot Coast Guard cutter and San Diego Harbor police are at the scene.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say a Coast Guard patrol boat has collided with a recreational boat in San Diego Bay.

Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Josh Nelson says there have been injuries reported in the crash that occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday, but it was not yet clear how many people were on the boats and how many were injured.

The Coast Guard vessel was a 33-foot patrol boat, but Nelson did not know the size of the recreational boat.

SAN DIEGO — A 33-foot Coast Guard vessel and a recreational boat collided Sunday as a Christmas watercraft parade was going on in San Diego Bay, killing one person and seriously injuring five others, authorities said.
No one aboard the Coast Guard patrol boat was hurt in the crash just before 6 p.m., and everyone on the recreational craft was accounted for, said Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque.

Authorities have not released details on how the accident occurred, but it came just after sundown in clear weather with light winds.

The injured were rushed to University of California, San Diego Hospital, where one person was declared dead, Coast Guard spokeswoman Jetta Disco said in a statement. The victim wasn't immediately identified.

Five others, including a child, were treated for serious injuries.

"They're all considered major traumas," Luque said, but had no further details on the nature of the injuries.

Neither boat was participating in the parade, said Ron Sheehan, spokesman for the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, in which more than 80 vessels festooned with Christmas lights and decorations cruise through the bay.

Many boats full of spectators filled the bay to watch the parade and fireworks. But the Coast Guard did not say if the recreational boat was among them or how close the accident occurred to the parade area.

The parade's Web site said an estimated 80,000 people were expected to attend the last of eight nights of the parade Sunday, which also featured a fireworks show.

The 87-foot Coast Guard cutter Haddock had been scheduled to lead the parade, which was supposed to begin about the same time as the accident, but was called away to the collision scene.

The parade otherwise continued as planned, Sheehan said.

Paramedics took the child victim to a fuel dock at Harbor Island then taken by ambulance to the hospital, and the five injured adults were taken by boat to Shelter Island, then by ambulance to the hospital.

The Coast Guard patrol boat was responding to a report of a grounded vessel at the time of the collision, Disco said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, she said. It was not clear how fast either boat was traveling.

Both boats returned to shore and were being assessed for damages, Disco said. The size and type of civilian boat were not released.

The weather was clear with light winds at the time of the crash.

San Diego Harbor Police and the San Diego Fire Department assisted in the rescue efforts, said Coast Guard Lt. Josh Nelson.

There are no facts. It was not shown that the powerboat was at anchor or under way. If at anchor did he have an anchor light on? We have no idea what direction either boat was traveling. So far "right of way" has not been established. There is no way to even have any idea who was right or wrong.

13 people on a 24" boat???? The article said that they "were responding to an emergency". Since when is a grounded boat an emergency? They must have run out of rum?

Sounds like there are a lot of questions to be answered.

Unfortunately this was bound to happen, under trained, aggressive, young coasties with little to no experience operating powerful power boats and night with millions of lights, (all colors) around. I am sure they are trying to figure out how to shift the blame to the spectator boat operator.

This is a horrible accident that will effect everyone involved for the rest of their lives. I hope the coasties do the right thing and accept the blame. Although I doubt it will work out that way.

I think its unfair to throw all the blame at them, with little evidence on the table.

I will however say that from our coasties i expect better. To me being in this line of work requires planning on idiots cutting you off, things happening, and you need to be driving like everyone else is an idiot. There just isn't room for these cock-ups. even if the boater didn't have lights, or was moving, these fellas shoulda had their heads up. It is their job to be more responsible than the rest of us.

Like any big harbor, in any big city, San Diego is a non-stop fuking light show after sunset. I'm sure we've all gotten confused and/or disorganized coming into one like this at one time or another..........

We have "Coast Guard Island" here. The CG cowboys are regularly buzzing up and down the Estuary at full throttle in a pair of big ribs. There are sections with speed restrictions but apparently the CG is exempt. Add the normal traffic on a busy weekend and it's a recipe for disaster.

Very sorry to read this. I can't imagine what facts could come out that would change my perspective.

did Clean join the Coast Guard?
OK, that's funny.

BUT, there are almost no details that could come out that could exonerate the Coasties for colliding with another boat (anchored or not) while responding to a "grounding"... Anyway, I didn't think they even DID that shit anymore, haven't SeaTow & TowBoatUS taken over that kind of mundane occurrence?
it is less funny now reading an 8 yr old died.
