I am responding to Lilmurrays past # 2056. I didn't want to quote that long post but will address some inaccuracies.

1, CDX lumber is a grade with a better veneer which has C rating on one side and the D on the other. That number 24/0 is a rating for roof/floor span which means it is rated for 24" on center spacing for roof loads but is not rated for floors at all (0). Was HR using it for hulls? That is an ultralight roof rating like for coastal Cali and is not rated for snow loads at all. It is the cheapest crap you can buy. The 7/16" OSB stuff we use for wall sheathing out here is rated higher and is stronger. So he is using stuff that is not rated for one snowflake but can stand the high seas.

2. Over 99.99% of all construction uses stud grade studs for walls. Studs are usually white wood which can be spruce and pine or they can be hemlock fir and will have a WW or HF. Doug fir studs are rarer. Strength in a stud standing vertically is not usually an issue. Using it for boats is another story. Stud grade is above a #3 but below a #2. Typically the joists and rafters are #2. Select Structural is rated higher than #2 and even #1 and is almost never specified due to the high cost except in public works jobs like schools because these are also evacuation centers. Nobody ever uses #3 grade and actually is hard to come by except at those home builder stores.

Thanks for the greetings. Piss off and I'll get some pics of my girlfriends tits. I just want to belong. Is this like an initiation?

So Cal
hey people nana here with a little info on this project. this is my first post and so sorry if I do bad.

I'm a bay area native who is part of HR,s extended family. I cant tell you how sea worthy the FH is or isn't.

I can tell you we wont have long to wait. I would ask forum members here to support HR for just one reason, having a dream and working oneself to the bone to make your dream happen.

2 men making a boat. or a house or a combo of the two. in two years while working side jobs to do it deserves recognition!!

Dreams can and do often change to nightmares in the blink of an eye. Many people in the middle of our country are living through this as I type this. due to powerful storms

I would ask for this forum to help HR in everyway possible . Insults to a boxer or mma fighter don't do a thing when they come from the crowd.

If you post comments here that you are two chicken ship to say to rods face you are far less than a sailor. real men have the nads to say what they mean to the person they are saying it too.

most common comments 1 what is it? = a cupcake

2 how do you know it floats =resin covered wood floats(possibly many pieces)but floats..

3 when will you launch= when they/we are ready.

I am worried about many things on this build. because I have done many metal parts on the FH . I work as a cnc machinist. Another boat I make parts for is team Artemis racing. the Americas cup cat..Did it capsize do to lack of experience/skill or not enough engineering?? or expensive materials.. Mother nature wins. just a matter or time.

So just so you all know HR is driven by universe! Universe is making it all happen against all odds. i'm not sure why, nature may demand a sacrifice, or likes to make fools of internet posters. I think both!!

Point Is I want to know who is willing to see us fly or fail. Celebrate with us or drag our asses out of the bay. I will post again tomorrow . HR wasn't too happy and now the lawyer is on the job if you are using a likeness of HR or FH this is your only warning .stop now or face full prosecution to the maximum extent of the law. If your taking pics. have the guts to say i'm posting it on the web ok rod.

if you have the will and means to help with $ or rescue floatilla and or equipment let me know 10 am tomorrow at the loch lomond marina

we will give 20 min on board tour with the soon to be in/famous Hot Rod asking $100 donation. Iets see if enough people come out to make one side of FH drop at all. I think not.

and lastly remember what Gandhi say.....

First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win . by Mahatma Gandhi.

We are ready for the fight ..hehe 10 am see u jellies
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

That is some A+ quality trolling because that is the only reason for this post. If to some miracle your are indeed serious I weep for your....

Please explain the "prosecution to the maximum extent of the law". No really, I'll wait.....and oh, what crack lawyer has 'ol HR retained with his vast fortune? Taking pictures of some delusional retard in public and posting them to the interwebs is not exactly what one would describe as an invasion of privacy. But again, please send the lawyers, we're all waiting....

Nanaj2013 - were you in a previous life part of Weid Stowe's east coast mission control? Has racingwag/SockPuppetToBeNamedLater finally given up the meth binge in Hoboken and relocated to the other coast? Do you like gladiator movies? Have you ever seen a grown man naked?

Before ya circle the lawyers, take a look at the links to the 1000 days clusterfuck I posted a few pages back - it can get a lot weirder.

Now, if you have grifted your way around the student loan biz and get pissed off enough to circle the lawyers, give clean or the Ed a heads up. I'm sure they will appriciate it.

Well nanaj, when Hotrod sails into Nelson, I will take him a big bottle of rum, introduce myself with my user name and my real name and apologise for ever doubting him.

Until then I stand by my stance, The boat is lucky to still be in one piece.

A one off design isn't proven until it's proven, any odd design will attract attention.

This boat's just so fucken odd it's gettin lots of attention.

You have got to be shitting me. Nanaj2013, if that's your real name, that was a great first post. Thank you.

Since you seem to like to quote the great philosophers, here's one I kind of like. Can't remember who said it, but I think it really applies in this situation.

"The sea is beautiful and vast and is going to fucking destroy that piece of shit in about two minutes, everyone is going to die, and seagulls are going to shit on anything still floating. Because the Universe is like that."

It may have been Herman Melville or maybe Dick Chaney who said that, not really sure.

This is the rub, people will be expected to put their lives at risk to 'drag our asses out of the bay'.

Do what you want, it's your life, but don't expect people to come rescue you when/if it all goes bad.

Nana, don't worry about the boat, but get HR to the emergency psych ward as soon as possible. Dial 911, tell them he is delusional and suicidal. That is how you can provide the support that is really needed.

I stand by the accuracy of my post 100%. It is supported both by experience and knowledge of the quoted references. I cannot say that I have inspected 100% of the housing stock in the US so I can't say what percentage of residential construction uses STUD grade lumber, but I can say that is not that common to see it used in the good portion of Northern CA that I am familiar with. Indeed, there is a bit of nuance to to what I am saying, and I would be happy to explain it at length if you wish. However, none of it changes any of the substance of my my original post. Two key facts in my post are what are most important here. Stud grade lumber is not acceptable for any structural use other than vertical wall framing, and second C-D rated Sheathing, Exposure 1, while commonly referred to in the building trade as CDX, is not in fact exterior glue.

I think I take back my suggestion about doing the double hull with foam stiffening, it seems like he would be better off spending that money on a beat up old boat like that wet catamaran earlier in the post, and then selling off the wood in that cat for chipboard material.

Nothing to respond to LM,

Your reports are well thought out ,impartial and informational. A refreshing rarity.

Up to each individual who to listen to for info, opinions, query, research, learn from and/or discard.

Thanks for the update,

+1 bigtime, especially the "impartial and informational. A refreshing rarity" bit.

Nanaj -

What you don't seem to realize is that a lot of people here have tons of experience in offshore sailing and in some very rocky conditions.

A little mental exercise for you:

Take one hull of the catamaran and quickly lift it out of the water till the boat has 45 degrees of heel.

Drop it. (no gentle lowering just let it drop!)

Repeat with the other hull.

Keep doing that every 45 seconds for 3 days.

How quickly is the boat going to fail in that very simple example of "non houseboat" seas?

I am sure others could provide similar examples of other stress scenarios that the boat will need to endure in order to survive.

What others have said here in a not so nice way (this is SA after all) is that the materials and architecture are deficient. Glaringly so.

Go soak a piece of that plywood in the ocean and see how long it takes before it comes apart.

Now let's look closely at the lower right corner of this picture. For clarity I have also rotated the image and sharpened it. There has been quite a bit of discussion in this thread about the materials used on this craft. Several sources, including Hot Rod himself have indicated that the hulls were made from 1/2 material. This is not the case. I captured many images of grade and specification marks and this one down near the waterline clearly indicates that the plywood used is 3/8" C-D sheathing grade plywood, commonly referred to in the US building trade as CDX. Every other plywood grading mark I captured in the hull sections is consistent with this. This material allows for considerable knots and voids. 3/8 panels are structurally span rated at 24-0. That means they are span rated against the grain at 20 inches and with the grain at 0 inches. C-D grade sheathing contains significant knots and voids, and is rated at Exposure 1. Exposure 1 panels are not "exterior glue" per se. The glue used in these panels is designed to withstand some wetness and dampness encountered during the construction process but is not rated for long term exposure to the elements. If you would like the definitive word on what 3/8 C-D sheathing plywood is rated to do have a look here: http://www.plumcreek...ctInfo/J20.pdf.

Oh dear. It just gets worse. I had understood that the hulls were skinned with 1/2 in ply. Now it turns out they are only 3/8th and C D grade at that.

Well Wharram used 3/8th his 38 ft design. does any one know what was used on his 63 ft Pahi? I have seen one report where the hulls were described a ' heavily glassed ply a total of 5/8th thick.

I have a friend who has built a couple of Pahi [whatever.. 52? 53?] and sailed them across the Indian Ocean and many times in winds over 60 knots.

I have an inquiry into him for the build specs.

nanaj2013, are you serious? Lawyers? For what? I fail to see what if anything has been done to you or HR. A guy build a huge ass boat in public for all to see and entertains people who stop by to "discuss" it's progress with cameras and shit. Now it's in the water, making it even more accessible. What did you think the pics were for? Something for the album? Nobody keeps albums anymore they put the photo's on facebook, twitter, youtube, wherever. $100 a pop for a tour? The QE2 is less and I'd rather see that. Good luck with your plywood cat, hope it works out but no, I won't be there to pic your ass out of the bay.

You work for Artemis? Not sure that's a resume builder around here right now.
