Sorry to bust your bubble Mike, but I do work for a sawmill that sells it's chip. They don't even like plastic cable-tie ends in the chip, the chip has to be "clean".

Boat has no market as chip.
Fuel pellets?
Nah, the epoxy would make it toxic, and the screws would jam the burner, this has landfill written all over it. Probably the taxpayer that HR was trying to avoid being will have to foot the bill to clean up the remains of his boondogle, otherwise it will end up as a hazard to navigation. Pity he didn't use ferroconcrete, it would have at least made a decent artificial reef.

Similarly saw mils will not take yard trees near a house. 20 years ago we harvested the mature hardwoods on a 120 parcel. The loggers then took down two dozen large trees in our yard for free, but dumped them in the woods. Too much risk of the blade hitting a piece of metall and ruining it. OId clothesline bolt or something like that.... They saved me a bunch of dough versus having a tree service come in, but I had a large cleanup job with big holes in the ground where they fell.

Oh this just gets better all the time. Oh and the supreme court ruled that you have no right to privacy in public, anyone can take your picture any time, film you, but strangely enough, not record you. If I remember it right. In any case there' if your listening Nana if your listening your best bet if you really want to help ole Hot Rod is to call your physician and explain the situation to him. He has the authority to have Rod detained and evaluated for his potential to inflict harm on himself and others. The boat is an absolute death trap and IMHO its unfortunate it made the launch, cause now people are in danger of drowning. The construction methodology is so wholly and entirely substandard that the vessel has zero chance of survival.

Love
B

PS
Do yourself a favor and divest from this insanity, lives are at stake and you yourself could find yourself in an actionable position if you do end up hurting anyone particularly now that you have the foreknowledge that among other things, the boat is entirely unsuitable and unsafe for travel or even occupancy. Failing to act accordingly and informing anyone coming aboard of the situation as well as having then sign a waiver "WILL" get you that team of circled lawyers your so hot on. Except your going to be the one surrounded. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like you guys have the cash to pay the damages your likely to inflict, besides, whats it cost to return someones life, wife, or family member ?

Give up while your ahead and if your all that determined to build a boat, guy some prints and do it right.

My two cents
B

One of my friends has a beautifully restored and maintained 45 foot Crocker ketch. It sits prominently on a mooring at the end of Main Street in front of the CT River Museum. He used to get his panties all in a bunch about another friend making good money painting and selling paintings of his boat. He figured that he should get a royalty or something on each painting or print. I told him that when it comes time to sell the boat it will be so well known that he will probably get a premium for it!! : - )

sound advice. We sell art and one of the most painted/drawn/photographed spots in VT is right up the road. I now know the guy who owns it because he came in asking us for $ from the artists who were using the farm in their work. Turns out he "could" protect it but it would take many thousands of dollars to get all the legal mumbo jumbo in place and then it would be up to him to defend/go after artist. And after all that he would get a really tiny piece of the sale. To put his mind at ease I calculated the previous years sales that would have been in play and he would have made something like $125. He decided it wasn't worth it

This is a good example of HR's expertise. It's a carriage (not coach, lm) bolt. It's meant to be used without a washer on the head end and the square part driven into the wood to keep it from tuning when the nut is tightened. Just the wrong bolt for this application. Hardly the goofiest thing done here. 3/8 CDX - holy shit - you wouldn't use it for a shed roof.

thanks a million lm.

I gotta say, in light of the build materials, this whole thing is a bit depressing for me. I really like that HotRod took it on himself to build the boat, from palettes to boat, very fast. But I don't see an easy or affordable way to make that boat seaworthy. He could do the thing with the inner hulls and foam, and glass up the outside, but that would all end up costing more than a very nice boat and the structural improvements would still be lacking because of the underlying structure.

I see two options ...

1. Just finish it, drift around the bay, enjoy himself and when the hulls finally bust, maybe someone would be willing to haul it out in exchange for the salavage value. It might last years in reasonable conditions, and he'll have a terrific story to tell.

2. Get together $25k or so, haul the giant cat out to the hard again, disassemble it, pile all that plywood up, design a much smaller monohull, use that plywood doubled up, maybe tripled up down near the keel, with glue between the individual sheets and then use the $25k to glass it up properly, fit it out, double hull it with foam between the layers.

Any other choices that anyone can see, other than just walking away from it?

I beleive the square part of the head on carriage bolts are meant to lock into the square hole of a metal plate, not sunk into the wood. That's how all of our local docks are built with them.
no, good with wood just not too many times, why they were developed for carriage bodies

Another fine example of how the world is being increasingly driven by selfish greed.

I remember a time, not so long ago, when people would have gotten a kick out of, or felt honoured that someone wanted to paint their property.

Now it's "Where's my fucking piece? You'll hear from my lawyers".

I'm beginning to understand the really old people I've known who were glad to be getting out.

Bhyde: I suggest we refer to this as the "Universal Quote". Perhaps Ghandi would have revered it and it seems famous yacht designers from around the world already have.

"The sea is beautiful and vast and is going to fucking destroy that piece of shit in about two minutes, everyone is going to die, and seagulls are going to shit on anything still floating. Because the Universe is like that."

Maybe expand and set to music? Ballroom Blitz by the Sweet:

It's, it's a piece of shit...

i can't possibly believe that guy was really HR's extended family... honestly just a poor troll

it does all reinforce Shakespeare's very old, yet very apropos line:

"First thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers"

I beleive he meant "family" in that he contributed parts to the venture, or got paid to make them, so has some ownership as part of the team

I like that quote but I think it came from Olin Stephens.
