Boat in the prime spot, this shot taken beer in hand from the balcony of the bar. Looking out there is a big low island 2.5km out, very flat water. Today was 6-8 knts. Actually got the #1 jib on, we where doing 7-7.2s uphill, 7.8 downhill with the code zero, low 8's with the A2.

IMG-20230219-WA0004.jpeg

View from the apartment, coffee shop 100m down the road, pub and bottle shop next door. But about 5km from the boat/park.

Car is all back in one bit, no structural issues, but lots of broken plastic.

Alex is out and catch lots of fish, so I'm guessing I know what's for dinner, jB

Thought I should share this with you.

14ft planks on a Skate!!! Makes 33ft wings on a 18teen look tame.
I had a Skate once and I remember 2 x 14ft planks, so both skipper and crew out that far.
You knew you where alive, this shot is probably mid 1970's about when I had my Skate.
(but this is not me) Amazing boats, then and still are! GT was also a mad Skate sailor, far madder than me.
Still going Julian....but more madder , more funner......

Way to fast for your normal spinnaker, always wire luff flatties.
And didn't they have some load, if the plank was not securely cleated/chocked in place, it was very very painful.
Think mine was # 876, so just before this one, again mid 70's.
This photo of Pete Winney and Bruce Hollis was taken in Ceduna SA I think. 1982. They won the Nationals that year, which was the last year of the single luff spinnaker and that mainsail design. Went to bigger double luff spinnakers and reacher mainsails.

Very profound day.

Went out in a beautiful 12-16knts breeze, within 30 mins, we had 30-35knts.
Delayed start, a mayday call, one of the division 2 boats had a MOB.
Cut a long story short, he died, so racing was called off.

The welcome dinner tonight has also been called off.

We had some issues, soft shackles broke, we where doing over 18 knts, under 2 sails.
GT was steering as I was putting out bush-fires fwd. Lots of green water over the deck, Pretty wild, but nothing major broke, rigging the reefing line tomorrow.

Huge wave swamp our motor, so we have to sail into the dock under jib doing 7-8 knts BS.

So lots double checking systems and safety procedures.

Skeeter had fun throwing in a reef.
There are 11 sportsboats here, everyone survived, un-affected, except the obvious.

We are looking seriously at a number 3 jib, it's looking famous!
Just need to get one.

Car is OK, had it checked out today, structurally, no damage, but need a new headlight and grill.
I have brought the new headlight, (the grill is 3 months away), Headlight is being fitted Thursday.

Not sure whats happening tomorrow, but expect a early start, possibly 2 races.

Thanks for your comment re Dm20 rigging . DP looks Stunning and appears to be performing equal to her looks. Your Frank disclosure of problems and solutions is hugely refreshing and educational

No excuses, we just had super fresh whiting, with sensational company and salads on the deck while re building spreaders.

1st race today, box seat, nailed it and the soft shackle on the jib blew up. 2 sail ( we had a reef in) at 18-19knts, back to the dock, fixed that. Back out, #2 jib with reef, fresh, decided to play it very safe (start). Ok start but not 1st row. Skeeter and another where ahead 1st cross, but we where 100m ahead 1st mark. Then shit got real. Spin in the water, torn the top spreaders off, not a happy puppy. It was blowing 24-28knts, those that survived, great day, wish we were one, but alas, back to the dock, mast out, spinnaker off to the sailmaker, and spreader
20230221_223931.jpg

are in the barbecue curing.

Early start tomorrow, spreaders on, mast back up, get the boat back in the water and try again.

A Dan Leech 7...saw a NZd one that had been strip planked on a beautiful , robust and accurate CNC puzzle cut jig.. Dan has really mastered this technique check out his revamp of the fleet world wide with his plywood OK dinghys the whole thing is a fantastic well priced kit that is easy to keep accurate for the homebuilder

Leech 7... the owner was putting up for sale , a while back ..unfinished at a good price with all materials to finish plus some gear but logistics in shipping, looked at living and building there... but after dramas at building location...let it go .
Nice to see here in action ...It will be interesting if we see more tube socketed winged boats as opposed to solid removable..the kiwi sailors have a bunch of tube wing sports boats.
Pipeline when building was going to be tube ?? but there was a consensus in oz for non tube wing if I recall right.. what will be the future..?

I have been waiting for the official results so I could actually give you numbers, but a big day for the good guys after such a huge effort from the whole crew and some very friendly very supportive friends. Yes we won, and we won pretty big. It was about 100min race, passage style. Skeeter came 2nd and it was not a small distance. We started sailing through the multihulls that started 5mins ahead of us. Wind was mostly 6-8, occasionally building to 10. Max speed was 12.7knt, pretty sure that was the 2nd long spin reach. Pulling 7's uphill, tacking angle well under 90⁰.
Had lots of opportunities to look at fin wake (yaw). It ranged 200 -250mm. The extra rake has increased rudder weight, still very manageable, but I'm guessing it's now carrying 20%.
Btw, rudder weight and feel are far better, extra rake has been 1000% plus. Issue is how much more should I add.

We stopped for lunch in one of thr remote bays ( with 500 of my closest friends) and Alex snapped this shot.

So I will let you work out the rake.

Bunch of protests are holding up official results but we are back to being very happy puppies. 3 bullets from 3 finishes, but also 3 DFN form the other 3 races. Need to work on our averages.
