I just watched episode 1. It did not address the scantlings that I could see.
my best guess is that they overbuilt these because they expected them to decay. and so the boat would live on despite the rot. I guess history concurs.

but - realistically - you could probably fashion two Tally-Ho's out of the materials they have used for one. awesome. Theseus clones.

EPISODE 147
The sun is shining in the boatyard, but the temperature has dropped - there’s a thin layer of ice on the water in the marina.

Inside a large green hanger several boatbuilders struggle to wrestle aluminium diesel tanks into a wooden boat.

Meanwhile, the cockpit footwell is subjected to more vacuum-bagging, to glue up the beautiful teak cladding.

I am appreciating how much Russel Brown has rubbed off on the construction of the boat (the removable cockpit) as well as the time and care that has gone into the electrical installation -- Leo is a dream client

EPISODE 148

In this episode we follow a lot of amazing woodwork - Zeal bolts together and shapes the huge purpleheart rudder, and Nic fits builds some elegant cherry cabinetry in the Head.

We also get a visit from some local musicians, and George cooks Salmon with an oxy-propane torch - it’s just another day in the boatyard!

Zeal is remarkably talented. It's a joy to watch a quiet, competent craftsperson just do their thing. There were so many ways that rudder could've gone sideways and, of course, you don't see the little oopsies on film, but all the big stuff was executed beautifully. Those long bores came out dead on. The intermediate shaping with an axe could've easily left some scars, but didn't. Etc, etc.

EPISODE 149

In this episode we trick Patty with some fake poop, we shock our faces with microcurrent in the name of capitalism, and we discover the best places to warm tortillas on your diesel engine.

On a more serious note, we also talk about the dangers of electrocution at sea and catch up with progress on Tally Ho’s systems - including a full explanation of the electrical distribution locker, the black water plumbing system, and the hybrid shaft-clutch mechanism.

Kinda suprised the engine system doesn't already integrate a shaft clutch, given that it's a prerequisite to intended operation.

I agree. I also find the shaft clutch system kinda clunky -- but i couldn't begin to imagine how one would design a better solution.

Is he making a mistake on the vented loop for the lavac head intake? Or did he just gloss over it because he was afraid nobody would understand? What I mean is, I don't think you can put an ordinary vented loop on the raw water intake for a lavac head. The head relies on suction to draw raw water into the bowl. A normal vented loop won't allow that suction to pull water up and over. It will just suck air. Or maybe a little water will come. So the lavac (it is my understanding) uses a vented loop with a restricted orifice for air. And that restriction is really important to keeping the whole system working.

I am not a specialist, but I was wondering the same thing.
However, if you watch at 26:00, when he starts explaining the flushing of the toilet, there is a small caption at the bottom of the screen around 26:20, explaining that the vent will be "closed" when flushing the toilet; I do not know how this happens, though...
