A big project!

BB: "This was the first video where I thought that where the scaling up of effort really landed with me"

I felt the same way. It also made me wonder, what's next for Leo. I think he talked about wanting to race the boat on the 100th anniversary of it winning the Fastnet, 2027??? But he's got such a going concern that it would be a shame to not continue in some way. Either immediately with his crew in charge or after his voyaging jones have been satisfied.

Maybe come back and start in on some other cool project of his or (someone else's) dreams. I would imagine that he would be able to earn a good living doing what he is doing now. He, (his patrons), certainly are supporting an impressive payroll and supply chain. Tally Ho is the only utuber I've ever contributed to, and that was way back at the beginning, before the patron-o-sphere had become so annoying. Go Leo.

The epic build quality continues. I do find the combination of old and new materials, used wisely, really compelling.

beneath the traditional (looking) whipping is a core of dyneema. where said dyneema is way, way, way oversize. not sure what the loads are on this rig - but 1" dyneema is sorta strong. pretty sure.

I suppose it's all about the hand though.

I am surprised though. for some reason I thought that a traditional rig would want some spring in its rig. I guess not.

I hope to see the episode where he puts the capstan back together, let us know.

Its amazing what you can disassemble with enough patience, lube, heat, persistent pressure and most importantly a bigger hammer.

I wonder if it can be remade to be electrically powered. It looks like the vertical shaft could be coupled from below deck to an electric (gear) motor. The rebuilder did say he might have to make a new shaft because of the corrosion. Perhaps it can be remade with an added, below deck, spline to do such a thing.

It would be cool to see if he can recast that head piece with some personalized info such as the capstan rebuilder's mark, an inscription/logo of the Sampson Boat Company and the relaunch date (an estimate of course, maybe just the year, 2023??).

If I had to guess, I'd predict that Leo will rebuild/repair the capstan in a way that's faithful to the original design but will come up with an adapter that'll let him use a big cordless drill, WinchRite, or similar gizmo to power it without permanent modification.

I'd expect he'll put a large DC or hydraulic motor right under it, since he's probably going to be carrying 80 fathoms of 3/8" stud-link chain and a 100lb anchor. Before he gets too much more of the interior fitted, those heavy cables or hydraulic pipes will have to be led forward from the engine room. A cordless drill attachment just won't cut it.
