I have recently bought an XJ from Jy Cross in NYC. He wasn't using it and I have enough 14s, so why not? There are also a few other 14ers who are making the step and including As in their sailing programs. Fred, Trevor, Tina and Paul all now have boats. So the Santa Cruz fleet is going to be fun.
So having sailed 14s for many years, I have become a numbers junkie. Why should the A be any different. Clearly I "must" learn how to sail the boat and put time in the water. However, I assume just like the 14, if you get some of the fundementals wrong (like rake) you are going to be off the pace.
So for Steve, Ben et al with A-Cat and XJ experience, I am hoping you can all chime in and help me get started.
Rake - Is there a common way that everyone measures it? Does it go from boat to boat? What have you found are quick numbers, in what conditions?
Rig tension - Does it matter? Numbers?
Diamond tension - I have heard others talk about it. They have a way of squeezing them to the mast and determining repeatable settings.
Mast rotation?
Thanks in advance everyone!
Also, the boat is currently on a trailer on Long Island Sound (Brightpoint Marina I think). I am looking for a way to get the boat to Florida for this January's pre-world regatta. Any ideas, offers, etc would be appreciated.
