The American Jewish habit of eating at Chinese restaurants on Christmas or Christmas Eve is a common stereotype portrayed in film and television, but has a factual basis as the tradition may have arisen from the lack of other open restaurants on Christmas Day.

The Australian Christian/atheist/agnostic/couldn't give a fuck Sydney-Hobart racers habit c1970's of eating at Jewish restaurants (specifically the Cosmopolitan Restaurant in Double Bay, Sydney) arose from the lack of other open Restaurants on Christmas Day. I can vouch for this. Can't remember the hosts' names now, but they accepted our booking year after year.
