A majority of Republicans agreed that the law applied to Nixon. A slight majority, rallied by Goldwater who hated Nixon personally, plus a bunch of them had a grudge against him for his manipulating campaign finances. If Nixon hadn't been such a drunk bullying asshole to his own party, more them would have supported him regardless.
Biggest difference... slightly less adherence to ethics and country over party, slightly more backbone to stand up to a bully within their party, back then.
