The last AC was a bore fest. Just because they wear helmets and go fast on foils doesn't make it exciting for me.

It's now all about foiling with a little bit of sailing thrown in.


If the AC40 is the F2 to the AC's F1 why have auto height control?

Because the AC40's are designed to be easier for Youth and Womens teams to be able to sail. Its a turn key package.
The teams themselves have their own LEQ12, which they'll no doubt use to develop their own control systems, but the current AC40 is one design, and is designed for ease of use.

Isn't it requiring teams to partner or invest in hydrogen vessel technology which there is real potential long-term spinoff advances for the better? its not requiring teams to by the TNZ tech, if you want to invest elsewhere then you are welcome to partner with other commercial suppliers but its forcing investment in greener techology

No it is not green!

-The hydrogen boat as designed has no useful purpose and is just a huge added cost.
-Other boat suppliers have much more practical hydrogen or electric boats and the commercial spin-off of the ABNZ boat is nil to zero
-All of the teams will still have to use gasoline powered tenders in order to support the AC75s (carry sails, crew, right capsized AC75, etc)

Dalton is insisting because the world must change our thinking about the types of energies we use. Because thats the direction the world is moving. Dalton is NOT forcing anyone to buy the Team NZ chase boat, but they ARE forcing people to change the way they think.

And why would it be any damn business of the AC holder to force challengers to invest in particular technology? If Oracle had pulled the same stunt, GD would have screamed blue murder and rightly so.

One could argue that with the HSV mandate TNZ has denied each team their ability to spend that same hundreds of thousands of dollars installing proven tech that would provide immediate, tangible, long-term benefits for the environment.

Suggest some should take the time and read through the HSV thread without fanboy greenwashing blinders on. Multiple references have been provided regarding hydrogen tech and its actual full circle environmental impact - not just zero tailpipe emissions.

Sure R&D needs to be done on hydrogen tech and other tech to help with climate change. Over time the tech will improve. But as of now the mandated HSV wreaks of greenwashing and helping a TNZ sponsor (Toyota) with their internal R&D.

Boat building in general is not green. You end up tossing twice as much in the bin as you put in the boat. Think of all the prepreg plastic backer, consumables, molds, plugs, cutoffs. Adding hydrogen to it doesn’t make a lick of difference. If they modified a 50 year old powerboat with. Detroit desiel to hydrogen you might have an argument but not this. This is just greenwashing

Call it greenwashing or what ever you want to call it. Its about reducing emissions. Producing EV's isn't green either, yet its the future. If you can produce a product with zero emissions, you can then go back and refine the manufacturing process.
But to say we can't build anything until we figure out a way to manufacture without harming the environment is just procrastination. Removing vehicles that produce emissions is the goal, because it must be the goal. Once that goal is achieved, refining the manufacturing process to make that process less harmful is the next goal. Too many people in here would rather nothing be done, and climate change prevention be put in the too hard basket so we can carry on living our lives of luxury and let someone else deal with it.

If not the mandate, teams would have no incentive, and nothing would be done simply because its not the goal of an Americas Cup team to solve climate change. The goal is to win the Americas Cup. At least with the mandate, teams must make real tangible and visible decisions to reduce emissions.
You can call it greenwashing all you want, but you'll soon be forced to purchase an EV. The manufacture and disposal process of batteries for EV's isn't exactly green either, yet its a step in the right direction.

Nobody would have complained if TNZ mandated that each AC team were to spend $$$ on immediately available tech that would have real long-term benefits to the environment.
