Alinghi Challenge AC37

Writer Matt Brown takes a nice shot at the alleged cost saving's measures in his article:

"...

The cost of entry, totalling around $12 million, is thought to be a major deterrent to potential new challengers and flies in the face of promises of cost savings.

Entrants must pay a second payment of $1.83 million by September 21 next year and if paid in instalments, the cost will rise to $2.05 million.

Entrants must also pay a website contribution of $150,000, a America's Cup Properties International (ACPI) contribution of $25,000, a $1.47 million performance bond, three $293,000 preliminary regattas entry fees, buy an AC40 yacht package at a maximum cost of $1.85 million and buy two hydrogen-powered support vessels at a cost of $2 million each. There are also a number of shared costs such as weather and recon costs that have yet to be determined...."

That's pretty shitty reporting Matt. cost of entry is not $12 M. The Herald reporters are scum, always trying to paint things in the most negative way possible.

They could say this in so many other ways that would actually be considered as reporting the facts.

'both' teams, did another enter today? edit: oh, i see it now including

In a statement Team New Zealand said: "Entries have opened for the 37th America's Cup as of 12am December 1st. The Defender (RNZYS & Emirates Team New Zealand) have had very positive initial interest and already received a number of entries.

"However, in terms of the identities of the Challengers, it is up to the teams themselves to announce their individual challenge when they are ready as some do wish to remain confidential for now."

Remember that the fees and costs in the Protocol are in USD. For the New Zealand Herald audience, he is  translating those numbers into NZD. Right now the NZD is worth about .68 USD.

The initial $1 million USD entry fee translates into 1.47 million NZD.

Not all dollars are created equal.

Am really looking forward to seeing what YC Alinghi Challenged under. If it is under SNG then they could be just dangling a fishhook to get some Prot changes agreed to, the most obvious one being in the sailor-nationality restrictions.

You are grasping at straws here. There is no way the Nationality Rule will be changed. Alinghi is not in a Position to bargain here. ETNZ & INEOS have mutually agreed to those Nationality Rules so either Ernesto accepts it or he can go "FISHING" - Period!

From what Ive heard, Dalts has been talking to Ernesto for many many months about re-entering.

I dont have it confirmed personally but dont be surprised if Alinghi end up with ETNZ B1.

Dalts and Ernesto have always had a good relationship, both being as ruthless as each other when it comes to winning. Massive mutual respect.

Ernesto has zero sway on protocol and nationality rules and has signed on believing he can fill the sailing team with Swiss talent (passport or family connection), remembering Swiss are not part of the EU and the freedom of movement and employment laws.

This is really fucken exciting for the cup.

Two wins in three events. That's quite a record to bring to the table.

I would expect to see some familiar names show up there, as well as a lot of new ones.

Fully funded and a winning record.

Hmmm....

"A force to be reckoned with" is the term that comes to mind.

Despite teams being allowed to announce their own entries, Shoebie apparently saw it fit to leak that ahead of time. It could suggest ETNZ needs Alinghi for in their whatever-all negotiations, but leaving Alinghi the luxury of time to confirm and the leverage to make a deal. Just guessing, obviously.

I doubt EB commits to anything Ratcliffe-sized real-money unless or until the team is able to convince him, later.
oops, was trying to quote and edit.. silly phone, need an SAAC one

Matt is saying the entry fee is $12M. Not $1.2M.

That's exactly the impression I had, despite what some of the antagonists here have been saying. Admittedly I had my doubts too, when Dalts threw in the nationality rules, but then yes, they are ruthless (but fair  ).

And may I ask which familiar name comes up first?

Or is he still under contract with the other Bert?

Anyone else get this rumor? 'Alinghi has signed a purchase agreement to buy Defiant from AM.'

Supposedly Ineos is already into designing and building a test-boat, not wanting to wait for and trust the AC40-whatever. Would that be an 'LEQ12'? How many of them are you allowed to build?

not me, i'd heard something very similar to this one;

I dont have it confirmed personally but dont be surprised if Alinghi end up with ETNZ B1.
Whatever happens, someone at Alinghi needs to get their sense of humour together and put a few plastic lawn chairs out on the tarmac....
