1000 Sands  race is including the Ocean 50 along with the Class40s

Let's go ! This Saturday April 9, the Ocean Fifty and Class40 fleets of the 2nd edition of the 1000 Milles des Sables set off respectively at 2 p.m. and then at 2:40 p.m. Propelled by a northwesterly flow of a dozen knots, they thus started the race in ideal conditions, even if the first complications are already pointing their noses. From this evening, the competitors will, in fact, have to manage a first phase of transition on the side of the Rochebonne plateau. The key is a soft zone from which we will have to extricate ourselves as best we can before tackling the continuation which promises to be both technical and varied until the last miles. Enough to spice up this first round of the season which happens, for a large majority of the sailors in the running, to also be a first solo on their machine! “In a season, the first race is always a bit special. This is even more true when it is played alone,” commented Sam Goodchild, shortly before leaving the Vendée Globe pontoon, in Port Olona, this Saturday. He, like many of the competitors in the event, is one of those who will, for the first time, do battle at the helm of their mount solo. "In this context, there is bound to be a little apprehension", confided the skipper of Leyton who started the race on the hats of wheels this afternoon, signing the best start of the Ocean Fifty and then overflowing the buoy clearance in the lead before frankly taking off. “There are many unknowns but I feel well prepared. I sailed a lot in the pre-season and I am well surrounded. I don't think I can be more ready than I am today," said the Briton, without hiding his ambitions for victory. “If today the priority is to qualify for the Route du Rhum, when you are a competitor and you line up at the start of a race, you necessarily want to win it”, added the navigator. , 2nd in the first edition in 2018 in Class40, clearly determined to put his name once again on the winners of the event. "I know it's not going to be easy. It's going to be complex, since we're going to have wind, slack, upwind, downwind... We're going to take all the sails out of the wardrobe but above all, we're going to have to be vigilant in terms of tactics. From this evening, we will have to negotiate an area of light winds. Another passage promises to be tricky off Cape Finisterre. In either case, there will be much to lose or gain. Ditto then downwind in strong winds. We won't have to do anything stupid because our boats are more stable upside down than right side up! “, detailed Sam Goodchild. In fact, if the two successive course changes made by the Race Direction in order to guarantee maximum safety for the runners will allow him, like the others, to avoid tough and boat-breaking conditions when approaching the Occidentale de Sein, sustained conditions will however accompany them on the outskirts of La Coruña tomorrow evening, as explained by Christian Dumard, weather consultant for the race: "Rapidly this afternoon, the wind will weaken and it will remain very soft. until the arrival, in the second part of the night, of a new east-southeast wind. A flow that will then gradually strengthen and even become gusty as it approaches Cape Ortegal. From then on, the Ocean Fifty, which will sail crosswind, will find themselves with more than four meters of head swell. They risk playing the tightrope walker”. The driving will not always be easy for the sailors who will also have to multiply the maneuvers, but the program promises to be perfect for finding your marks solo in this year's Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe. "It's going to be sporty but really complete, so great for gauging yourself and validating a certain number of technical points", confirmed Erwan Le Roux (Koesio). An opinion shared by Ian Lipinski, engaged in Class40 on Crédit Mutuel. “We're preparing for a fairly complete event, with wind, no wind... it's going to be great training even if, obviously, it's still a race. The thing is that since it's a cover, we'll have to be careful not to go faster than the music and stay within its ranges. It turns out that it's easy to say on land but it's harder to apply when you're on the water. We know that once the start is given, it's complicated to slow down and be reasonable. We know that going beyond what we are capable of is exposing ourselves to making mistakes and losing a lot”. If all the competitors, whatever their class, have announced that they are there above all to win their qualification for the Route du Rhum, find their marks alone or even validate the technical choices made this winter, there is, in fact, a strong to bet that they will have trouble res

Erwan le Roux forced to retire from the 1000 miles of Sables in Ocean Fifty - ITW

Leaving yesterday afternoon around 2 p.m. for the 1000 Miles of Sables, Erwan Le Roux made a good start to the race with his Ocean Fifty Koesio, settling for a time at the head of the fleet before being confronted with electronic problems in the second part of the night, shortly after passing the BXA buoy located off the entrance to the Gironde estuary.

“we will carry out a complete check”

“ Two hours after passing the mark, I saw strange things appear on the dials, then a complete blackout followed. I found myself facing the wind under gennak, without light, without a pilot, without a computer… a bit as if the system had tripped ”, commented the skipper of Koesio on his arrival at the Vendée Globe pontoon in Port Olona, this Sunday morning. , shortly before 8:30 a.m.

“ It took me a long time to succeed in restarting the whole thing. The autopilot then only operated in “compass” mode. I don't know what happened yet but with the team, we are going to carry out a complete check to determine the origin of the problem ", added the Trinitain who was then leading the dance with a three-mile lead on his nearest competitor.

"Good Feelings"

“ It's always frustrating to see others pass by and be forced to throw in the towel. Fortunately, this didn't have any consequences, but it's a shame because I really had a good feeling over the first few miles of the race. I did everything that needed to be done, well in order. I'm happy with that ,” finished Erwan Le Roux, whose mount will stay in Vendée until Wednesday before heading to the Mediterranean.

Interesting that the keel fin is slanted backward, what is the reasoning on this one? The other class 40 have vertical keels right?

CLASS40/OCEAN FIFTY.  At the end of a thrilling final, Corentin Douguet (Quéguiner-Innoveo) won the 1000 Miles of Les Sables in Class40 on Thursday, ahead of Ian Lipinski (Crédit Mutuel) and Axel Tréhin (Project Rescue Ocean). In Ocean Fifty, while three of the five participants gave up - Sébastien Rogues (personal decision), Erwan Le Roux (electronics) and Armel Tripon (capsizing, the boat could be recovered) -, the victory went to Sam Goodchild (Leyton) ahead of Eric Péron (Komilfo).

As in other backward slanted keels, vcg aft, but structure for keel to hull more forward. Could be structural optimisation of that area. Keel and mast structure closer together.
