All things Class40

As we finish the joining of deck and hull, we'll be turning back to the foils, which, at this point, means doing the pre-fab building of our keel box for installation in the next week or two.  Other than the design and engineering of the mast, there's probably nothing I've thought about as hard as the attachment of the keel.  And because this is the last chance to fiddle with the design, I'm giving myself headaches this week.  I spend a lot of time staring at CAD screens, but somehow juvenile cardboard models help clear the mind...

The Class 40 is an essential series of major transatlantic races (Route Du Rhum, Jacques Vabre, Transat Anglaise, Quebec Saint Malo). She consistently represents the bulk of their fleet.

“  It was obvious for us to pass on a scow to still improve in performance and get the first places. We could have used existing plans for the construction, but we took the gamble of starting with a  new design , which will be the evolution of an already proven concept  ,” explains Luke Berry.

For his previous boat, the skipper had chosen to call on a renowned architect, Sam Manuard, who has so far designed 13 Class40s. Luke and his partners have renewed their confidence in him, as in the JPS Production shipyard, also renowned for the quality of its constructions.

These boats must respect a very strict gauge, established in order to limit the budgets and the performance gaps between the sailboats. This gauge also called "box rule" imposes many limitations including a minimum weight and a maximum "righting" (power of the boat) as well as the construction materials used. The whole game of the architect is therefore to optimize the boat while respecting this gauge and to find the small faults of the latter in order to have the most efficient boat possible.

Luke's future boat will be the  very first Mach 5 .

"  It will also be the first evolution of a scow, the first V2  ", notes Sam Manuard. “  The other architects come out of scows but they are first versions. To draw the Mach 5, we benefited from all the experience of the Mach 4, and from the observations of the other scows. Luke has a very good idea of what works on the different models. This made it possible to define a new concept that we believe to be very effective.  Luke will have one of the newest boats in the fleet and hopefully one of the most accomplished . He will have the weapons to aim for the first places, in particular on the Route du Rhum. »

One thing is certain: the Mach 5 will be innovative.

We wanted to design a boat that was powerful, versatile, fast, more ergonomic and optimized for the Route du Rhum  " , emphasizes Luke. Emphasis has been placed on ergonomics and “comfort” on board. “  Today, the Class40s can reach very high speeds and the limit is starting to be human. It's the sailors' ability to keep up with the imposed speeds that makes the difference  ”, analyzes the sailor.

“  The ergonomics of the cockpit is becoming a decisive aspect. The general level goes up to Class40 and to win, you have to be able to attack hard. This requires increased protection, good vision from the lookout position, the possibility of regulating the sails and adjusting the trajectories constantly without getting too tired. It is in this perspective that we have worked.  »  Sam Manuard

The result is very positive with 4 podiums for this year 2021.

The boat can easily reach 25 knots, it is accessible, easy to handle, efficient and reliable. It is an  excellent medium  for taking project partners and collaborators out to sea!

Early on, we chose to build the nose cone out of pure glass and epoxy in order to make it strong and accommodate the complex shape.  Now that we've installed the forward watertight hatch, we have a lovely glow-light when the sun is right.  Makes it nicer to work in the dusty interior.

Slowly, the boat begins to have a little personality.

Tomorrow:  it's all about the windows.

The early Class 40s were designed for cruising, but as the class has become more successful, the interiors have become much less spacious even as the scow hulls became larger.  My idea has always been to make the most of the vast space of the Class 40 interior in a sort of 'minimalist cruiser' sort of way... and also to install good amount of window area because a dank interior is no fun at all.

I stand 6'2".  We designed a roof a little higher than most, and a cabin a little wider than most.  We haven't installed the panel between the cockpit and cabin yet (where the main hatches will be) so this photo shows the interior space of the boat quite well.  I will not be messing up the interior with an internal halyard chute.

As for windows, I intended simple, vaguely rectangular windows, but I have two Italians working on the crew, and they were aghast at my lack of style.  They re-designed on the fly.

Maximum headroom will be about 6'6", or 1.98m, standing on the flooring we install over the stringers.  Functional headroom throughout most of the main cabin will be at least 6'4" (which, not coincidentally, is the height of my teenager).

That is a luxury, floorboards, have not seen one in ages.
Good to see another C40 approach to built them.
"Floorboards" might be a misleadingly grand term, as we'll only have a low-slung panel over the center-most section in the main cabin area, but it will create a nice even surface, protect water ballast tubing etc., and help manage drainage a bit.  Not as comfy as the old Pogos, but...
