these are killer boats, my kinda' boat. straight up, no bullshit.
'The Ocean Race' should be using scaled-up 70ft. versions.
Or at least 60' IMOCA compliant ones. They seem more robust that the canting keel foilers, and higher volume hulls would be less affected by having a crew aboard. The 40'ers proved to be in the same league as the IMOCAs in the RdR, a 60' version would have to be faster than many older generation IMOCAs - without the complexity of foils and canting Keel.

I agree. I don't really care how much faster a dot is moving on a map. What's most important is that there are enough of them to put on a show. There's not much of a show happening out there right now. 75' with material limitations similar to Class 40 and you would have boats that are plenty fast enough for sponsors and likely cheaper than an IMOCA.

It's to prevent spray from shrouds and caperail rail going in the water. Probably adds righting moment when heeled over. Some class 40 ,add a tarp in the area to prevent the annoying spray going on the cockpit.
please explain walls on the hull past the mid of the hull
It's actually the old paprec arkea that won route du Rhum with yoann richome. If you go to the class40 webpage /boats it shows each boat history.

Piro, the small boards at the shrouds are for spray deflection as seen on quite a few class 40's.
The larger " bulwark " style hull sides aft of the shrouds that you are referring to are essentially a raised sheer that does not affect the Righting moment when the boat is at 90 degrees for the pull down test. It also makes a very cozy spot to stack sails on the high side and may add a little aero on the low side in light to med.breeze.

Weight it's actually not an issue on class40s. There is a minimum weight and they could build them a lot lighter.
That used to be true with "pointy" bows, where you'd typically have to add 50-100kg of iron or lead at the bottom of the hull, between the keel and the companionway, to reach the minimum weight.
The added surface area and the structural reinforcement needed to withstand the increased shocks of scow bows changed it. It has become quite hard, actually, to build a reliable scow Class40 that doesn't exceed the minimum weight.
