The major problem is wealth inequality, not income inequality.  That means tax wealth.

Step 1.

Institute national property tax.

Step 2.

Return property tax to every man, woman, child equally so that it exactly balances the property tax.  Net federal income is zero.

Average Americans see minimal change.  High wealth property owners in expensive coastal cities give money to low income renters in the Midwest and southern states. Call it reparations or peace dividend or guaranteed income or welfare.  Doesn't matter.

Taxing 'money' doesn't help.  Taxing income doesn't help - it is mobile and too fungible. Property is not mobile.  Go to the source.

EDIT:

Step 3.  Auction off UHF spectrum.

Step 4.  Use proceeds to provide 3G and broadband Internet for minimal services for free to rural Americans.

---------

Step 5.  Put tax on financial institutions and use tax to create minimum banking services for free.  100 free transactions / month.  No fees for deposits or checking.  Maximum balance of $5000 / account.  Banking institutions can avoid tax by providing services.

1,
Well, I'm getting buried in losses at the farm. Good thing I have another job. Lots of farmers don't and they're going broke and committing suicide in epic numbers right now.
It's pretty tragic.

A client (soybeans and corn) shared his solution with me yesterday.   He hopes crop insurance will soon cover barley, he’s looking at the beer market as a way out.   He agrees the Chinese bean market is lost for at least a generation.

Farming has always entailed risk.  Demanding the government remove them leads to trouble.

As I mentioned earlier, if we didn't have other income from rental properties, that we started acquiring in 1984, we could not survive on 10 bucks an hour take home pay, $80.00 a day, less than $21,000 annually, we could not afford to live.  Wife was making about the same at a 32 hour/week part time prep cook job, which provided free groceries, except she has been out of work for the past two months with medical issues.  I cannot fathom how single job folks can afford to live on 80 bucks a day.  The USA is in a ever accelerating race to the bottom, that is both embarsassing and tragic.  I know a lot of poor people who will not get out of bed for less than a hundred  bucks a day..

I've been a Landlord for 35 years, and never before have I had 3 or 4 tenants who cannot keep up with their rent payments, until now....

Thanks Trump for MAGA.
Landlord myself here.

I think something more along the lines of the "Great Recession" caused the current crop of hand to mouth, check to check types.

So I'll blame the TBTF banking system over Trump.

I’m not blaming Trump for decades of bad policy rewarding the 1% at the expense of the majority. For the tariff wars? That’s on him.

@Bad Attitude while I agree with the issue, the root cause predates Donnie.  It even predates the rule of “Obama the Perfect”.  As the US economy continues to automate and move jobs to third world countries, there will be a shrinking pool of middle income jobs.  As Backstay noted, employers are perfectly willing to pay the lowest wage possible for labor.

Interestingly, the same folks who complain about low income and lack of opportunities will shop at WalMart, select items made in third world counties (lower price) and use the self-checkout lines.

IMHO, only a matter of time until the US version of the “Gilets Jaunes” movement gets started.  Then, and perhaps only then, will there be change.

Much the same in Australia.  Low unemployment (5.2%), but we've got stagnant wage growth, lots of part-time jobs, not enough hours. Average/low income is being outstripped by cost of living. If you're not in a senior corporate or government gig, you're battling.

Twenty years ago I was earning more per hour, working more hours, and all life's essentials cost half of today's prices.  Thank fuck I paid off almost all my mortgage in those times, or I'd have to give up beer and smoking.

Trump is just a symptom of how bad things have got. You can thank 5 decades of corporate lobbying. A succession of corrupt and weak governments of both left and right tweaking the laws to suit the guys who make them rich/have the nasty evidence/go to the same church/ etc.

A massive banking collapse, for which nobody went to jail, didn't help. The government of the day had no choice but to bail those fuckers out, ironically for the common good. Some big investors made a serious killing out of that one.

Keeping the drones quiet is a very profitable industry too. TV, booze, drugs, religion, sport, porn, keep the masses in a dull and compliant state while making shitloads of money.  The theatre of politics makes them think their voice counts and blinds them to the fact that their true rulers are fucking them harder every year. With no lube and no foreplay...….
