Annapolis to Bermuda 2016

I'm looking forward to this race next June. It has some unique challenges, with the first leg being down the Bay overnight, and the new venue in Bermuda is a nice club. And Bermuda is a whole hell of a lot of fun, particularly after five or so days on the boat. Hopefully they'll get a better turn out than in 2014. Looks like they are putting more energy into it this time around and I hope that pays off.

Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, Tennis courts, nice big club. I am guessing the shower situation is better too...

were you guys out in St Georges previously?

RHADC is a nice place to hang for a few days.

Yes at the St. Georges Dinghy Club. I personally prefer St. Georges to Hamilton..it's more down tempo and scenic, but the club just couldn't offer the level of support required by the race from what I've heard. RHADC is sure to be a dramatic step up in terms of amenities, services, and logistical support.

St Georges is nice - except when the cruise ships are in...

Anyway, the dinghy club is near enough to Hamilton without really being in it.

I see your start is june 10, and the newport start is june 17 - I guess it has happened, but i don't remember them being that close together before

The cruise ships don't go into St. Georges anymore. They got too big to fit through the cut and the facilities just aren't there. They all go into Hamilton now, IIRC.

The two races have been "back to back" like that in previous years. Some boats have finished A2B, re-provisioned, and taken off the next day for Newport but that's pretty hardcore. The A2B was moved from the alternate year to the same year as N2B to not conflict with M2B, which is more direct competition for A2B.

The cruise ships go to the Navy Yard at the other end of the island from St. George's.

the problem is that the town of st georges is now mostly organized around selling tacky gifts and t-shirts to cruise people

i think a lot of it is closed down when there isn't a ship in

Only marginally, but the club is much nicer, overall. No med moor off the sea wall, either.
I have a long list of worlds worst shower facilities from cruising. The one from the last place was mediocre but far from the worst.

Tie for worst is Key west bight "Concentration Camp" showers. Cinderblock walls and vents to the shitter on the other side that homeless crap all over plus in summer the cold water is still hot. Second is Raiatea Carenage, floor flooded every time you had a shower and instead of fixing it they had a squeegee on a mop handle to push the water out of the rust gap at the bottom of the door. If pressure was turned up too high the pipe connecting the head to the handles shot off the top like a rocket. That one would get worst but the smell of a homeless guy smoking a cig while taking a diarheea shit in 105 degree heat really is hard to beat.

Good times

I think if they turned this into a Newport News - Bermuda Race.., it would be a lot more popular.

As someone who only sails occasionally on the Chesapeake.., that whole part adds too much uncertainty

I think it scares away people who aren't locals, and maybe some locals too...

I don't know if it's going to take 1 day or 3 days to get out of the bay

I figure there is a lot of local knowledge needed so i am at a disadvantage

I could ruin my race practically before it begins.

Why do I want to take the trouble to get a boat down there to maybe spend 2 days sailing in no wind?

I would not put too much stock in local knowledge. We did quite well in the last iteration and I would venture to say that anyone could have made the same calls local or not. Nice thing about the bay is that it gives the crew time to get in tune before you are offshore, and time for folks who may not be as prepared as they think they are to bail out. Shake out the jitters before the deep blue as it were. As far as taking the trouble to get there, a cruise to Annapolis for the start is not the worst thing in the world. Annapolis vs. Newport News as a destination is not much of a matchup.
