I see that we (Ireland) are punching above our weight in this chart. My uneducated guess is that our relatively high rate is down to the drug gangs and their feuds, rather than ordinary citizens, the vast majority of whom have never even seen a gun.

You all live in comparative wealth, non of these shooters live in poverty.

Of course the ready availability of guns makes it easier, but do you think for one minute, that having to plan to get a gun and wait would have stopped them?

Focusing on the ready availability of guns may stop a lot of the domestic killings, but the mass shootings and mass shooters are in a category all of their own.

Others commit suicide, some taking their family with them. But where else do these people think they are entitled to shoot up as many strangers as they can.
Is it simply the US craving for fame and notoriety that makes them do it, their increasingly short moments in the headlines? I dunno.

I stay away from big box stores.

I left a big box store a few years ago with a cart, happened to be a Lowe's, and somehow set off big alarms after checking out and leaving through the exit doors. I forget what it was, was perfectly innocent, two folks came and sorted it quickly.

What may be needed is to have detectors required on a huge number of places, at the entrance doors.

This could be prevented; all it would take is for every voter to be a single-issue voter for one cycle and vote every republican out of congress. This would achieve two things. Allow the democrats to do what they need to do to correct this, ie, outright ban on any weapon designed to kill people, maybe a buyback program for a defines period of time after which serious penalties if you are caught with one. This would only leave legitimate hunting rifles legal. It would also send a message to any politician that continuing to obstruct will not be tolerated by the public. After this is achieved the voters can go back to voting for republicans if they want but they would know that they can be voted out at any time if they continue being in the back pocket of the gun lobby. Every time we have one of these mass shootings and everyone is crying about all the innocent lives lost i can't help but wonder how many of the families of the victims voted for politicians who obstruct whenever the democrats try to do something practical about the problem. To be clear, only politicians can stop, or at least reduce this.

That is exactly what is driving the gun death rate here as well. These "mass killings" are little more than a blip in the stats, but it's all anyone can focus on.
