This one could be another mess. A friend at the Naval Academy told me about this early this morning. That channel is not very wide.

There is a dredged channel and charts fer Chrissakes.
Ya but that stretch just east of Bodkin creek is damn tricky for a big ship.  Channel is very narrow, and if you are a smidge off in judging the turn you are in 15 feet of water immediately on the other side of the mark.

Container ships are getting bigger an bigger,

requiring channels dredged to 50 feet, it was 40 feet not long ago.

Deepening is a huge expense not borne by the shipping companies.

Kent Island!
There were tugs there earlier that left and they are still there. Medium-high tide is about 0600 and high-high tide is 1800, so maybe they decided to just sit in the mud until tomorrow.

The authorities permitted the ship to enter

a pilot was onboard the ship

I suspect the the supply chain disaster in the west coasts ports has forced shippers to use secondary ports

a small container ship draws 8 meters

a medium , Panama. CAnal ship is 12 meters

a jumbo pacific containership is 16 meters deep

I don’t know the draught  of the grounded ship

I’ll bet that they were max draught  for the  channel

may chart says that channel is 9 meters deep

"Current draft" 13m
So this mean that the pilot needed to wiggle the ship down the channel

since I don’t have the liturature I don’t know how ships transit that channel

as you can see the channel as various depths

in many shipping channels the literature states that “ fully laden ships use the wrong side of the channel “

This  is done to prevent the ship from grounding out when it turns

perhaps the ship grounded in a turn
