I find myself looking for good books to read. My wife has her book club and I get some of the cast offs of that but I'm always on the hunt for a good book. I am planning to buy Buddy Melges' book, Sailing Smart, or add it to my Xmas "wish" list but I'm also looking for other suggestions.

I figured that this could be a good place for everybody to share their favorite books, sailing related or not.

Trout fishing in America by Richard Brautigan

It probably won't help you catch more fish, but it does have something to do with trout fishing.

I presume you’ve read some of Ben Macintyre’s books. They are worth a look. Operation Mincemeat (recently made into a film). Agent Zigzag, Double Cross, Rogue Heroes. Essentially these are about specific episodes in history, some good ww2 spy stuff all true, written in a style that’s very engaging. Good holiday fare…

a totally different one is about the Dreyfus affair. True story With a man falsely accused of treason sent to Devils Island (remember from Papillon).

I just finished re-reading Geraldine Brooks' 'People Of The Book' about a restored medieval Jewish text, historical fiction or perhaps fictionalized history. A lot of it revolves around the seige of Sarajevo in the '90s, the book was contemporary to that and I read it back then. Great story with an unusual personal perspective from the main character.

Highly recommended.

this is a loaded question, what do you want to read fiction, nonfiction, brain candy, do you want a series of books, fantasy, sci fi, western, detective, thriller, funny, serious etc.

I have lots of recommendations but to answer without more specifics would reveal more about me than I am comfortable with doing here.

This Jan Morris?

I'd heard good about the "Pax Britannica" series, will take a closer look at her works.

A lot of folks dismiss the classics in favor of contemporary works. That’s a mistake IMHO. Even a reread decades later is often enjoyable.
I just reread "The Wopshot Chronicles" by John Cheever a few weeks ago. Just as good as it was when I first read it some time in the 70s.

Then there’s Blitzed. If you’ve not read it , it’s a very good account of the use of methylamphetamine in Germany before and during WW2. Not just as a stimulant because of lack of caffeine, but as a tactical agent. Also Hitlers dodgy doctor got him addicted to the stuff.
